“This does not appear to be a SketchUp model” issue

I have a file that has been worked on for a week, no issues, it is not giving the “This does not appear to be a SketchUp model” issue.

How can I recover the file.

I can share the model file privately.

Thanks

hello, have you first tried renaming your backup file (.skb) into .skp and opening it ? (make a copy of it first)

It was an .skp file, not a backup, and for whatever reason, there was no .skb in there :grimacing:

Post the file. If it is larger than what the forum accepts, upload it to “the cloud”, make it accessible and share the link.

You can check your file with a hex editor. If it has a lot of empty space (zeros), it probably is not recoverable. This seems to occur most often when the file is opened directly from a cloud service, detachable drive or network drive. The recommendation is to save locally.

The file you sent me seems to contain data but what it actually is I don’t know. It has no SketchUp header. Did you use a file recovery application to get it? Letting @colin look at it might help as he has some superpower tools that mortals have no access to. If the file has no sensitive information you can post the link here. If it does, you can PM it to Colin.

Thanks for looking into it. I really appreciate it. I will forward it to Colin as well.

No, I hadn’t used any recovery software, so I’m not sure what’s going on there. From reading other similar posts, it’s likely the corruption has stemmed from working straight from a USB drive, an unnecessarily bad practice, and needless to say, not my usual workflow.
