Error msg "This does not appear to be a SketchUp model "

Hi everyone,

I worked on a SketchUp file yesterday and saved it normally. Today, when I tried to open it, I got this error message:

“This does not appear to be a SketchUp model.”

I also checked for backup files (.skb or autosaves), but unfortunately they seem to be missing or similarly corrupted.

As Mr. DaveR once said, “The most common reason for this error message is due to working on it while it is saved to an external drive or cloud storage,” and this is exactly what I was doing.

Has anyone experienced this before? Is there any reliable way to recover the model, or at least confirm whether it’s completely unrecoverable?

Thanks in advance for any help or insights.

It’s simple enough to confirm that it is unrecoverable. In your case the file is entirely filled with zeroes and nothing else. You can see that with a hex editor.

A viable SketchUp model would look something like this.

Another way to check is to compress the .skp file in a zip file. It shouldn’t compress by more than about 3 or 4 percent normally. In your case the file gets compressed from 15.7Mb to 19Kb or by 99.88%.

Do you have the .skb backup file? Have you tried renaming it to .skp and opening it?

Since you have a Pro subscription were you also saving to Trimble Connect?

Are you kidding? Would “Mr. Dave” have needed to post a reason for this message if it had not previously happened to others? A simple search in the forums reveals that the problem is quite common.
