I restarted my computer this morning, and now my Sketchup file won’t open and shows error message ‘This does not appear to be a Sketchup model.’ This error also coincided with the ‘You’ve exceeded your allowed activations’ message which I’ve solved, but now I’m unable to open my project.
I’ve been saving the file on my company Dropbox account, which I believe is simultaneously cloud-based and local file storage. I’ve tried copying the file from that shared folder to my local ‘Documents’ folder on my PC but no luck there either.
Sketchup forum won’t let me upload my SKB file… Is there a workaround for this?
Thanks so much, DaveR. I’ve seen your comments on similar posts, you are a legend. Hoping you can help.
Working on files saved directly to the cloud seems to be the most common cause for the kind of corrupted file you shared here. The best practice is to save to an internal folder and only copy the file to the DropBox folder after you’ve successfully saved it.
In addition to saving the file to an internal folder, you should also save it to Trimble Connect. Your Pro subscription includes unlimited storage there and it’s a good idea to utilize it to create a backup. Each time you save to Trimble Connect it generates an incremental save which means you can go back to an earlier version if needed.
Rename it to .skp
Thank you! I’m afraid I’m not very hopeful in this case but let’s see that .skb file renamed to .skp.
Great to know about Trimble Connect. I’ll start saving through there as a backup as well.
No worries if you’re unable to restore this one either - I only spent a few hours on it so I’ll start remaking it. I’ve been saving through Dropbox for years now and never encountered this issue so it’s strange that it’s happened now.
Hopefully it won’t take long to recreate the model.
I’d say you’ve been lucky that you haven’t run into this before. Who knows what got iin the way of a valid save in this case? Could be a brief hiccup in the connection anywhere between your computer and the DropBox server where the files were saved. Maybe a CAT6e was disconnected allowing the ones to run out on the floor leaving only the zeroes behind.
