@pratuan, I am sorry to inform you that the recovered file is empty.
As mentioned in my earlier post, chances of recovering such files are very low and it is strongly recommended for users to locate a working backup file or a previous version of the file and redo the work.
I 've got the same problem with the âunexpected file formatâ. Could you please help me. Give me your email and I send you my file. Its very urgent.
We are (constantly) suffering from the âUNEXPECTED FILE FORMATâ error. Can one of the SketchUp Team Members please ârepairâ our file? And/or provide a fix so it wonât keep happeningâŚ
Generally these errors are caused by incomplete saves due to communication errors and there is nothing that SketchUp can fix. The only reason why this can happen more frequently with Sketchup is that 3D model files are usually bigger than average, say, word processing files.
Save your files on your local hard drive or a drive in a trustworthy local network, not to âcloudâ services over the Internet.
We only save to our own internal drives, and we donât have âincomplete saveâ problems with ANY other software we use.
This appears to be a problem that MANY SketchUp users have, and one that SketchUp should address, especially for its PAYING customersâŚ
ps: In order to try and get around the UNEXPECTED FILE FORMAT error we have been âimportingâ SketchUp files into SketchUp with some success. But recently when we tried this fix we got a new error message: âFILE NOT FOUND OR INVALIDâ. How is it that SketchUp doesnât recognize its own .skp files?
Good Morning! I am new to the forum so please excuse if I ask something that has been covered. I teach Sketchup 2015 Pro to middle school students. I have a student who saved his work one day and the next it would not open. He received the unexpected file type error. I tried to open the .skb, but got the same error, I then tried to change the .skb file to .skp without success. Can someone please help. I am attaching the last 2 .skb. Thanks.https://www.dropbox.com/sh/p10k8qgqyxo0vh2/AAAqQlqv7geSeHMEH9P8QhMSa?dl=0
I canât open those files either. Unfortunately, SketchUp does not provide any kind of diagnostics when it decides a file is defective, it just refuses to open it. Sometimes someone on the Trimble SketchUp development team can examine a file, determine what is defective, and repair it - but not always. Sorry to say that is your only hope. Try contacting customer support.
Hi Guys, I am in the same position! Just tried to open a file and the dreaded unexpected file format occurred. This is a private project I am trying to work on at weekends so it kills me that when I attempted to do some work it would not open. I tried also the .skb file but to no joy! Anyway if you can help I am attaching the folder and hope someone is working over the weekend to try and restore it (2.9 MB)

Hello,
I have encountered the âUnexpected File Formatâ problem as well. All my back up files and previous files have the same error message. Would it be possible for you to try and recover my file?
It is a large file and I can send via weTransfer if you provide an email address.
