I’m relatively new to SketchUp and have recently moved from Mac air to Hp Omen 17 with windows. I have about 500 textures from one of the free websites which have worked perfectly on my Mac up to now, however, today I have pulled them to my new setup on my Omen and none of them are working correctly? They look like a solid colour and if you zoom in A LOT there’s a very very slight texture to it. For example a parquet floor that looks exactly like the download will appear on my Mac model, but the same texture looks like a solid orange on my windows. I’m creating models the same size and using the exact same download file as the one I uploaded to my Mac version previously. Please help!
Share a sample .skp file so we can see exactly what you’ve got going on.
sounds like you’re using the wrong template.
like, on mac, a mm
template, and on pc a m
template.
meaning that if you’re looking at your material on a 100x11 square, you’ll see the material really fine on the mac, but suuuuuper small on the pc.
could it be it ?
Thanks for coming back! So it definitely a sizing issue for the template, as you can see when zoomed extremely in the texture is identifiable. I am using architectural mm for both mac and windows so it shouldn’t be that, but totally appreciate it must be the texture size and this is where I need advice on what size to resize them too when I import the jpeg. Like I said, when I imported them to my mac I made no changes to them, and its the same file that I have added to windows.
Thanks
What are the dimensions of the rectangle you drew? What is the size of the area the texture is set to cover? In this case the pixel size of the texture image doesn’t matter. It would be a whole lot easier to help you if you just share the SketchUp file.
It looks like you have drawn a very large rectangle and the texture is set to be very small.
There isn’t a skp file I am working from in this instance, I am just drawing a rectangle to show you the issue. I started migrating from windows to mac yesterday and first point of call was to import all of my textures, which is when I came across the issue.
The rectangle is a 4mx3m, which when using the same effect in my mac in a model shows clearly as the parquet floor. Have shared an example texture jpg.
As I said, the issue is most definitely the sizing of the texture, but as I didn’t have to resize on my mac and am a newbie to sketch up I am unsure of the optimal size to reset the jpg textures to
migrating from mac to windows*
Create a simple model with the texture applied to the face and share that.
Exactly what process are you using to migrate the materials from Mac to Windows?
I downloaded the textures from a website as jpg, I am re-uploading the same files to windows. I have tried to create a model but cant get it under 16kb to share. I’ll carry on trying
example.skp (2.8 MB)
That’s kind of vague. Are you using the Import feature in the Materials panel to import the images into SketchUp? If so, you have to set the dimensions of the texture after importing it. SketchUp has no idea how large of an area the texture should cover. This is the same on both Windows and Mac.
The texture on the side is quite small as you can see in the Materials Edit pane.
The same with the wood floor on the bottom.
I don’t know exactly how large these textures should be but increasing the size of the wood floor texture by a factor of 10 makes it look reasonable to me.
When I import textures I use File>Import and apply the image as a texture to a rectangle that is sized to match the final size of the texture. For example these boards are all about 2400mm long. I drew rectangles that length and then applied the material stretching it to fit the length.
Do you already have the textures you want on the Mac? You could just copy the materials folders from there.
I think you’d be hard pressed to get a SketchUp model file under 16 Kb. The limit for the forum is 16 Mb.
Typo with the kb obviously! I meant mb!
Yes, all that you have explained is what I was sure was the case, it was the direction in what to set as the size of the materials that I needed. I have tried x10 like you suggested on a few of the textures previously causing the issue and this is now working. Thanks for your help!
You’re welcome.
10x worked well enough for the floor but that may not be correct for every material. I think you’d find it a lot easier to import the textures so they wind up the right size from the beginning and so you don’t have to fiddle with them.
Of course, if you get the images as jpg, you’ll have to use some judgement to decide how big they should be as a SketchUp material. Sometimes there are clues, such as typical tile sizes or floorboard widths.
