I’ve come across a big issue. I’m using Sketchup Pro 2023. I have a big file with a lot of objects I have affected different tags. I also imported several objects from 3D Warehouse which came with their own tags.
Now, to check everything, I hided all tags in order to show each tag separately and check which objects are affected to which tag.
But nothing displays anymore. I showed each tag separately and also all tags simultaneously, but only guides are showing, but no object any more. Unluckily I saved the file after hiding the tags. So closing SketchUp and opening it again doesn’t resolve the issue, I can’t get any object showing anymore.
The file size is 124Mb.
I don’t want to share the file cause it’s the exact reproduction of my personal house …
I’m running Windows 11 Pro, my PC has 32Gb RAM and only 17 are used, so it doesn’t seem to be a memory issue.
I understand your concern for privacy, and this is the internet so you could be a secret agent who has some time off to model their own home and needs to keep the location of the vault secret - but no one will be able to help and we will be guessing without seeing more information. Sharing the model is the easiest way to do this.
So some guesses:
Have you tried ‘Unhide All’ from the Edit menu?
When you turn tags on / off did you ‘Zoom Extents’ to make sure the objects come back into view?
Could the base geometry for all the objects in your model be on a tag that is off? Is the pencil in the Tag manager still on ‘Untagged’ or is that off too?
What do you see when you open Window>Outliner?
Did you delete any tags? If you did, did you delete the geometry / objects assigned to that tag or did you select to move them to another tag?
If you have actually hidden objects nested inside other things, it’s a tangle to unpick it…
But it sounds to me that you and/or the imported 3dWH models aren’t using Tags correctly.
All geometry [edges and faces] should be made on [or later assigned] the Tag ‘Untagged’ [aka ‘Layer0’].
That should always be your active Tag.
The containers [components/groups] should then have their own Tags allowing them to have their visibility toggled on/off.
If you have a container with a tag that is ‘on’ but its contents [geometry or other containers] all have a tag that’s ‘off’ you will see nothing…
Try switching all tags on, and zooming extents [perspective camera]…
Thanks for the help. I don’t have any “Outliner” option in the “Window” menu. I already tried all other suggestions (Unhide all, Zoom etc.), and yes, I tried toggling ALL tags on, with no luck.
I tried recovering an older version of the file to reproduce the issue but it doesn’t reproduce, on the older file I could turn all tags off then toggle them on, one by one, everything working. So I guess all I can do is redo my changes starting from the older file. Just saving every now and then to loose less changes if it happens again.
Also, thanks for the tip regarding only containers should be in tags but not geometry. I started this design with Sketchup version 2017, I suppose back then the behaviour was different, because I find geometry in tags where I never draw in in the past.
That hasn’t changed, so user error, or something you downloaded was modeled poorly, or maybe you made something a group or component, assigned it to a tag, exploded it, than made it into a new group or component.
The only thing that has changed since 2017 is that what are now called tags were then called layers. The name was changed to reduce confusion with other apps, including LayOut, that use layers for different behavior than SketchUp.
The advice to never apply tags to edges or faces is best practice to avoid confusing situations such as you describe. It has never been enforced by SketchUp. If you ignore it and create a mess, it is up to you to straighten out the mess.
Many 3dWH models have incorrect tag-usage - you can fix this using one of my tools.
Also, if you explode a container then any raw geometry in it gets the container’s former tag !
This has always been a silly foible of Sketchup !!
If you explode the results are selected, you can quickly use Entity Info to assign the Tag ‘Untagged’ - but if you have my Layer/TagWatcher installed it adds an option to the context menu to Explode to ‘Untagged’ - and the re-tagging is done automatically for you.
Another thing that my Layer/TagWatcher does is warn you if you change your active-tag away from Untagged, it doesn’t stop you BUT at least you were warned…
