Tags and layers

I havent had sketchup for a few years but used to find it a very useful tool for Architectural models.
I have just purchased the new version and it has tags instead of layers.
So I used to make layers for example Ground floor external walls and stretch them to first floor level make all the window holes render the materials i wanted then group it so anything i did didn’t damage it then i would do the same with first floor, roof, windows internal walls etcetera. Then I could turn off layers explode current layer and work on it ,then group it again. how can i make this work with Tabs i cant choose a layer and everything is on GLASS and i cant change it
I just want to draw in the layer i choose.
This current tabs system seems massive step backwards
Can anyone help
Many thanks

The switch from layers to tags is mostly a simple name change. They work the same way. That is, Untagged should be active at all times. ALL edges and faces should be created and remain untagged. Only groups and components should be given tags.

You couldn’t explode layers. That’s a function with groups and components. But if you were exploding groups or components to make edits you were working too hard. There’s no reason to explode when editing. Just open the object for editing and make your changes.

Now there are tag folders and tags can be given dash styles but in other respects nothing has changed but the word.

It’s not a step backwards if you are using them correctly. The same rules apply.

You should take the time to go through the tutorials at learn.sketchup.com

Also refer to the Help file article on tags. https://help.sketchup.com/en/sketchup/controlling-visibility-tags

Especially " By default, any new raw geometry you create has the ‘Untagged’ tag. Before assigning tags, make sure you understand the process of making groups and components. Your models will be much more predictable if you refrain from assigning tags to entities like edges or faces, or changing the active tag."
