SU 2016 to SU 2017 Upgrade Woes


I am upgrading SU Pro for my client and I noticed the serial number is very different. They are on a yearly cycle and are mid-cycle. How do I go about getting a new serial number?
Also, if I get a new serial number will that remove the serial number from the instances of 2016 Pro?
I ask because I am scripting the install and want to make sure the roll out is seamless.

You should remove any old licenses from machines that will no longer use them, before licensing newer versions, if you intend to move those licenses to other machines. You will not be permitted to remove older licenses from a machine, after licensing a newer version.
