STL will not import correctly

There a lot of posts about STLs not importing at all. Mine seem to import fine and quickly. But the model is all messed up, and it seems like its not really the same messed up each time I import it. I have tried every combo of import settings possible and different scales. I want to make this part of another part which is why I am trying to import it.

The file opens fine in my slicer.

Male-Housing-6-way-Typ2.stl (511.2 KB)

The .stl does import as a mess even with Import units set to Meters.

I opened it in FreeCAD and immediately exported it as a new .stl. That improved things greatly.

How are you using this thing in your model?

Yep, something very odd with the original .stl, same result for me. Imports messed up, but opens in cura fine and when exported from there imports happily into sketchup.
I’m curious how it was created in the first place.

Using the extension created by the SketchUp team - SketchUp STL

I wonder if it is related to the old scale -1/mirror problem that the built in stl exporter had/has. When the new inbuilt version was added it always failed to export mirrored objects correctly, which was odd because the sketchup team created plugin which you are using exported mirrored objects perfectly.
I haven’t tested lately to see if the inbuilt works correctly yet.

Possibly, but also it depends on what program this STL file was exported from. I have imported it into other software and with the exception of Twinmotion, where some faces seem to have their normal faces reversed, it looks ok.

Hence my comment.

It was Catia

I did not think of re-exporting it from another program.

I am building an enclosure for an ESP32 and some relays that are controlling a powered RV toilet. I am going to embed this inside the wall so it’s flush on the outside. It’s kind of overkill, but I can pickup the connections locally at a Napa.

So you are going to 3D print the thing? Or just use it for designing the wall?
