Start drawing rectangle at the intersection of two guidepoints

EDIT: just learned about the offset function which might solve this. But still interested in why I cannot get it to snap to the points.

Hi there,

I’m trying to make a floor plan that I would later like to turn into a 3d model.

The first thing is to draw the outer walls of the house which have a total thickness of 30 cm.

I have set the camera to top projection and used the rectangle tool to make the outline.

Now I want to ‘cut away’ the inside so that the total thickness of the walls are 30 cm.

I have set two guidepoints 30 cm from top and side of rectangle.

I would now take the rectangle tool to start drawing a new rectangle at the point where the two guidepoints intersect. But I cannot get the rectangle tool to ‘snap’ at the point where they intersect even though I first mouse over the two points?

Am I doing this wrong?

Is there a better approach to drawing walls with a certain thickness?

Hello
why not use the offset tools ?

Thanks a lot! Great explanation for both methods!

I can’t think of a good reason. I will ask the developers.

I checked in SketchUp 8, and it behaved the same way then.
