Hi,
I’ve created a 3D object with some kind of natural form.
I would like to horizontally split this object into pieces of x amount of MM.
How could I achieve this?
Thanks in advance!

Ok that does indeed work with a simple circle.
But it doesn’t seem to work for a more complex object:
top and bottom are same objects with different sizes and are connected by using a plugin called ‘fredo6_curviloft’.
Any idea how I could split this object?
It’s pretty much the same procedure…
Draw one or more horizontal surface(s) and move/copy it to the desired height(s), then intersect your natural shape with the model/selection en delete unwanted parts or convert/copy/paste specific parts into a new group/component?
Hope this helps…
PS if needed you can rotate them surfaces to not be horizontal, depending on your wishes to split the natural form
If you want to use an extension, there’s Slicer 5 from Sketchucation.
This can be done with native tools, too, although not quite so rapidly.
Make it a manifold solid, first. Group the geometry.
As was already suggested, you should spend time learning the basics of SketchUp before trying to do more advanced stuff like this.
You could benefit yourself by spending some time at The SketchUp Campus. This is a site that will provide the basics for learning the SketchUp modeling process. Also, spend some time at the SketchUp SketchUp YouTube site. It provides much information including how to use each tool.
How tall is the object you’ve modeled? What spacing did you select for the slices. In my case the object I models is 48 inches tall, slices are on 4 inch centers and the slices are 3/4 in. thick. You have to make intelligent settings for the object you’re slicing.
BTW, I asked you yesterday to correct your forum profile. Please do that now. You are not using the Free Plan of SketchUp. And take the time to learn to use SketchUp!
Two steps…
Step one - go to learn.sketchUp.com and take the Fundamentals course. You need to understand the basics before you tackle intermediate concepts (crawl before walk and all that).
Step two -
Model is 400 milimeters tall.
I actually don’t want any spacing, so I put this to 0mm.
Thickness 18mm
Ive also changed my profile.
Set the spacing to the same as the thicknes of the slices.
That works, thanks !
You found your solution, great!
Butt … better late then nevah … something like this?
This also works for me. Thanks!
You’re welcome.
Question: What is it you’re modeling?
FWIW, the Slicer extension will create components of the slices instead of groups. This can be useful, especially if you have it layout copies of the slices and have some need to edit them.
I’m a woodworking hobbyist and I’m trying to create some organic shaped MDF table with plates of 18mm thick.
That’s why I’ve tried to create the 3D object and want to ‘slice’ is in parts of 18mm to know how each piece should look like before assembling if that makes sence
That wood be a nice project
