How come you can upload the STL file, but not the SKP file - that is the SketchUp Model !?
From looking at the STL… you seem to have a ‘skirt’ that does not intersect the rest of the geometry properly, and some internal partitions in the two ‘ears’, there’s also a reversed face.
Ignoring “Solid Inspector” and any similar Plugins etc…
Make sure every edge has two faces - no more, no fewer.

Hi there,
im new here, trying to get help. Sort of new to sketchup, played around with it a few years ago. But im teaching myself sketchup via tutorials on youtube. Seemed easy and straight forward at first. But i seem to have come to a few problems with straight forward stuff…
Im also using solid inspector, dont know if its a help or a hindrance at the moment.
Can some one tell me what surface borders and interior surface edges are… solid inspector is asking me to fix them manually… I cant move forward without fixing these problems and i m not sure how really, apart from deleting stuff that i want??? i think i want???

To look inside a volume and find faulty geometry [and probably delete it] use temporary section-planes or xray mode…

This helps in getting me closer to why solid inspector doesnt like my windows…
Does this also explain why it doesnt like the wall next to the windows??? Im having trouble cutting holes in the wall and getting them to stay open. As redrawing the wall automatically covers up the holes, though the window is still there behind the surface, it wont let me have both
hmm I might have to rethink what I have modelled…
Can I not just draw a line on a surface? say my interpretation of a window, a 2d square with 1 vertical and 1 horizontal line dividing the sq into 4 smaller sqs for example?
Using the last image you posted as an example (thanks by the way) how would you make that work?? I mean having 2 cubes sitting next to each other?

You have 4 nested objects - probably components - the 2d face-me girl bottom right, and at least two windows in the wall.
You can’t have two cubes sharing an edge and have a solid - mover the edges 1mm apart or overlap them slightly, and remove any thing inner partition face that results.
Try using tt’s SolidInspector v1 - that highlights issues better, but it can’t fix them…

Hi thanks TIG,
Bear with me im learning as im going along, and im sort of finding it a little frustrating the small details that annoy sketchup. For example if I use your 2 cube image. Normally I’m assuming most of us would draw lets say several cubes exactly as your image shows using snap to point this would mean several cubes that are touching or sharing the same edge?
This would mean I would have to manually zoom into the cubes and overlap or separate each cube or add another edge individually?
Referring to my model, the hole in face problem, I find that at the moment I might need to sort some other problem out first before it lets me create the wall with holes where the windows are, and its most likely the problem with the windows you see in the image. And im assuming its the same with the temporary ceiling.
It wont let me create at the moment a wall with 3 holes for the 3 windows. At first it will cover up the entire wall when i redraw it, then it will allow me to delete the square where one of the windows are, but it wont allow me to do that to the remaining 2 windows and I think this is the same problem with the temporary ceiling.

Thats what I was worried about, that I need a miracle. Cant believe its taken me this long to get rid of the red line around the perimeter of my model thats weeks of scratching my head!
I just drew a flat sq to test, solid inspector didnt like it, it gave me a red boundary! deduction solid inspector doesnt like flat shapes. Sorry its like a revelation to me right now, i know its obvious in its name. But in my head everything i am drawing is a 3d thing, i didnt think about the floor, the base of my model.
At the moment my model is like a mind bending puzzle! Its making me look at my model in a different way.
Im actually wondering if these red lines are actually errors for me or carry on until ive finished modelling the entire model.
As pointed out earlier, an Edge that borders only a single Face violates the rules for a solid. As a result, it is impossible for any 2D shape to be a solid, regardless of whether it is embedded in a 3D space!

It might be worth moving all this discussion to another thread as it’s more about how to work with the basics than Solid Inspector.
Thanks for all your hard work TT. Perhaps this will be helpful. SketchUp has been acting a little hinky lately. Had to switch to Chrome to download models and then import them, as the internal IE process would freeze after a search or two. Memory leak maybe? Also this model has gotten a bit large for this little laptop. (HP Elitebook 8440p i7 Dual core CPU M 620 @ 2.67GHz - 4Gig Mem) I would offer more info, but I’m pretty much a rube. Sure do TIG. I just rebooted and all is well. SI has been working fine since then. Need to clean up my OS I think. Btw, Akismet is holding the rest of the error message until it figures out I’m not a spammer. Sorry. False alarm.
