Lightning Antenna

From an undated book printed in Spain. Probably from the 1950s. The caption translates as “antenna lightning rod”. I’m thinking I need to model an electrical arc spanning the rods and then figure out how to render it in Vray.

Now that should be interesting.

I hope so.

First draft of a spark. Straight out of SketchUp. I bet there’s a better way. Probably ought to add wires to the terminals on the sides, too.

Compressed Air Engine with CU
Another funny little engine. this one is designed to run on compressed air. Like usual I need to add screws.

Put the engine aside for a bit. This is a WIP of a large pulley with a hook on the bottom. Obviously the hook needs to be modeled, yet.

Finished enough. Time to feed the dog.

very eye-pleasing presentation

Thank you sir.

Added proper bolts, nuts, and wire rope just for fun.

Nice. My skeptical mind starts to think about what happens if you overload it. The hook is quite massive, and the rope too. But is it all fixed with a single quite small bolt?

Thank you.

I thought about it, too. It’s modeled to the dimensions that were provided. I guess a planned point of failure is good. Maybe it just requires the user to be smarter than the hook.

It would be interesting to know how you modeled the hook. Great work as always.

Thank you. I made a series of cross sections strung on a centerline curve drawn with FredoSpline. Then I joinded them with Loft along path from Curviloft. The top part of the hook down to the fillet was made with a profile and a circle for a path for Follow Me. After completing the skinning I deleted the centerline and the cross sections leaving the hook a solid component. Then the hole for the pin was “drilled” using Trim from BoolTools2.

FWIW, all of the components in the model are solid.

Doodling this morning while waiting for my coffee to brew. Replaced the six-strand wire rope with proper 6x7 wire rope. It’s all geometry. Certainly not recommended for a larger model but for just this thing by itself, it’s OK.

How long does it take your coffee to brew?

Ten or twelve minutes for the whole pot. I probably need to clean the lime out of it, though.

I got about a third of the new wire rope modeled when I remembered the individual wires in the strand are laid opposite to the way the strands are laid so I started over.

Nice, I got my coffee off 3D warehouse.

Those cable strands are really impressive.
