I’m confused about how to use ‘SketchUp Viewer for Mobile’ to view SketchUp models in Augmented Reality (AR).
Background
- macOS: 10.15.7.
- SketchUp: Pro 22.0.353.
- iOS: 15.5.
- iPad: SketchUp Viewer for Mobile: 5.5.1 (1766).
- iPhone: SketchUp Viewer for Mobile: 6.0.5 (1864).
I was able to quickly/easily save my SketchUp file (SKP) in SketchUp Pro (macOS) and publish it to Trimble Connect. I was able to quickly/easily access and open my SKP file in SketchUp Viewer (iOS) via Trimble Connect.
Issue 1: AR Tools
Incorrect AR Tools
Based on the SketchUp article about how to view models in AR with SketchUp Viewer for Mobile (Viewing Your Models in Augmented Reality | SketchUp Help), there are supposed to be tools (in a vertical left sidebar) for: Move, Scale, Rotate and Anchor.
However, when I open the the model in AR the only tools I see (in a horizontal bottom bar) are: Reset Tracking, Hide/Show Mesh, Reset Scale, 1:1.
Q: did these new AR tools replace the old AR tools or are the old AR tools still available, just hidden?
A: ???
If these new AR tools are all that is available currently, they seem to be MUCH less useful (to the point of almost being useless).
AR Model Placement
When the model opens in AR nothing happens? If I tap the ‘Hide/Show Mesh’, after a several second delay the mesh does eventually show up. And… if I wait another several seconds, I can see a small version of the model show up. However, the scale is wrong (way too small) and I have no idea what was used to determine its position (X,Y and Z) and rotation?
Scale
I can tap the ‘1:1’ button to get the scale correct, but I still have no idea how to get the position and rotation correct? Through experimentation I see that I can ‘pinch-zoom’ works for scaling, but that method is very inaccurate and was already accomplished with the ‘1:1’ button.
Position
I found that ‘sometimes’ I can top/hold to move the model, but I don’t think I’ve figured out exactly how to do that, because I can’t get it to work all the time. When I do get it to work, I find that I can move as far as my finger can go across the screen, but after I reach the edge, the model ‘drops’. If I try to tap/drag again, the model starts from the position it STARTED at, not the position I dropped it?
Rotation
I have not found a way through any finger combination to rotate the model. If the model placed incorrectly rotated, it stays that way until I close the model and open it again, hoping that it will orient rotation correctly.
Old AR Tools
ALL of these things appeared to have been solved with the ‘Old AR Tools’: Move, Scale, Rotate, Anchor. Perfect! EXACTLY the tools I would want and expect with an AR experience. What happened to them? Is there some way for me to access them that I’m not seeing? I do not see anything in the left except for an ‘X’ button to close the AR experience?
Any help about how to use SketchUp Viewer for Mobile for AR would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Issue 2: iPad but not iPhone
When I open the SKP file on my iPad (in SketchUp Viewer for Mobile), I see the tool for AR, but when I open the same file in the same app on iPhone, the AR tool is missing? Why would that be?
UPDATE: this issue was resolved in subsequent posts.
