Sketchup Unable to Save Model

Hi there:

I’ve been using the Sketchup app, and I just upgraded to the Pro version.

I started a new project, spent hours on it, and Sketchup won’t allow me to save it, save as, etc. It tells me I have to save it as a 2020 version. However, it doesn’t give me any options to do that.

Did I make a mistake in upgrading to the pro version?

SketchUp is unable to save your model. It is recommended that you attempt to save your model to SketchUp Version 2020 or earlier to prevent any loss of data.

If the problem persists, please contact Customer Support at https://help.sketchup.com/en/contact.

I figure I’m going to lose all my work because I use this laptop for personal and for work, and I can’t log out, unless I save my model, but Sketchup won’t let me.

try that

what you have is a rare situation where SU needs you to save the file in the older format, before it was compressed with 21+

the extension above allows you to do so.

Hi there:

Thanks for the instructions.

However, it says I have to re-install, so I’m assuming that means I’m going to lose all my work.

I seen that many others have the same problem.

I think I’m going to cancel my pro account and go back to the free app version, where I never had any problems.

Thanks.

Randy

I don’t have an answer, but a bunch of followup questions:

You wrote that you just upgraded to 2024 Pro. What were you using before? What did you use to create the file with which you are having this issue? I’ve seen warnings when opening a model created with an old version, but not about losing features when saving to a new version.

Did you contact customer support, as recommended by the message you quoted? This is not a common error and I haven’t heard of it before, but someone at Trimble should know what the message actually means and what you can do about it.

… it’s an extension. download it. install it. use it. no need to reinstall sketchup.

yes, because the ability to export to older versions was removed. your specific problem however, is different.

that’s a radical solution yes. your file has a simple problem that can be resolved by saving as SU2020 format. and I gave you the link to an extension doing exactly that. and fixed.

but yes, Pro has more issues than free. mainly because pro has a lot more tools and abilities than free.
it’s like saying my car has more issues than my bicycle.

If you don’t want to use the extension, you can just use the snipet of code inside.

Thanks so much for your help.

I know, I"m being dramatic…lollll.

I did download the extension, but nothing happened when I added it. That’s where it said I have to re-install/restart for the new extension to work. I had to really switch over to my work profile, so I had to close my personal profile, so I ended up losing all my work :frowning: That is upsetting. I have to re-do all my measurements and additions. I have them all written down, but it will probably take me a good hour or two to redo it all.

I just took a break and went back to Sketchup. It had my previous version saved, but not any of the changes I made last night.

I just don’t understand why it was working at first, and then tell me it won’t save, when I created my new project using Sketchup Pro :-(.

But, I really do appreciate your prompt responses and immediate feedback.

Randy
