Sketchup pro 2019 export fbx with vertices issue

I did some test.
Export fbx setting in skp pro 2019

Result in 3dsMax, vertices are disconnected.

There’s a welding vertices option in export 3ds setting.

Result of welding vertices is nice.

So, how do I export welded vertices fbx model from skecthup?

Have you tried to open the FBX file in other softwares?

@mihai.s Yes, I had try 3dsmax, C4D, the appearance of exported FBX seems right, but the vertex(vertices) is repeated as below

Usually, a 6 faces box will have 8 vertices, but the object is with 24 vertices, here’s the problem.

‘About FBX files, you will find two variants which are ASCII FBX and Binary FBX.’

SketchUp exports FBX as an ASCII FBX file. 3DSMax probably imports both types of FBX files, only the ASCII ones appear as you saw in your case, with triple vertices and doubled faces.

I tested with Blender, and it can’t import ASCII FBX files. So I opened the file in 3D Viewer (Win 10) and saved it as a GLTF Binary file, which I then imported into Blender.

It appeared to me as well as to you, with 24 vertices and 12 faces.

I cleaned it without any problems, so try to find a way to edit it in 3DSMax that doesn’t throw vertices like it did to you.

Much thanks for your reply, the article is really helpful, first time to know there’re two type formats of fbx file.

Due to 3dsMax can read .skp directly, I save skp file to skecthup 8 (my 3dsMax is 2013, the version of skp must lower than max), import to 3dsMax, then export as fbx file (Max can choose binary or ASCII format).
However, neither export ASCII nor binary format, console always shows material export failed.

In fact, it is a warning that some SketchUp materials may not be correctly recognized by some other programs.
Did you try to export as an OBJ file?

Recently (two days ago) I had a discussion about a similar issue regarding FBX files exported from SketchUp, and regarding the material, I also corrected it in Blender.

Our engineer is using FBX SDK for web page dev, so I have to export fbx format.
Cleaning up and correcting model is really cost lots of time and frustrating, especially only have one night to find out where the problem is.
Hope Trimble team can improve these issues in next two or three version.

New update:
Same material in Sketchup would using one vertice, so if a cube with 3 different materials, it’s vertices number is 19 (4 face *3=12 vertices, rest 3 face use 7 vertices).

Sketchup just not a modeling tool for game, or other purpose that need to count every vertices.

Yes, they promised to look at it. No, they didn’t so far as I can tell. SketchUp “Pro” as of 2020.02 still thinks that a cube has 72 vertices, if you export to FBX.

I’m afraid that SketchUp simply doesn’t have the precision needed in a professional engineering tool, so we stopped recommending it to our clients a year or two ago. I was also very disappointed with the quality of responses on the forum. A very poor understanding of basic computer science was displayed. I expected better for a “Pro” non-free tool.

72 vertices is way too crazy, totally not for industry standard.

And YES, totally agree with you. I don’t think open a technical category in official form, and let “PRO” users try error is a good way to Trimble’s reputation.

I wouldn’t recommend Sketchup to anyone as well.

Just to clarify, when I said “72 vertices” I mean 72 values in the vertices list. The actual number of 3D vertices is that number /3, i.e. 24 3D vertices.

Basically it exports the cube as 6 quad faces, polygon soup style, every bit as bad as STL, being too dumb to recognize common vertices. The OBJ exporter does it correctly: a cube has 6 3D vertices, each one shared by three connected faces.
