Sketchup Make 2017 - Installs but will not run

Correct installation of SketchUp involves right clicking on the installer and choosing Run as administrator. Do that now.

Have you been sending the reports? Have you added your name and e-mail address so someone at sketchUp would have some hope of linking those Bug splat reports to you?

Other people have reported sudden changes in behavior to SketchUp and other programs after automatic Windows updates. Are you sure that’s not the cause in this case?

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your help.

I opened as Administrator, same thing happens; when I click on, Start using sketchup, the window disappears, but no error report pops up now…

Yes, I have been sending the reports

Regarding the Windows 10 auto updates…I am not sure and I do not know how I would know…can you point me in a direction?

Michael

You misunderstood.
Log in using your normal user-name - NOT the Admin !
Find the SketchUp installer exe’s file icon [probably in your user’s Downloads folder].
Select it, right-click, context-menu > “Run as administrator”

As it’s already installed choose ‘Repair’.

Doing it other ways will cause issues.
So do not log in as the admin.
Even if you have admin-powers that is not sufficient to install apps properly.
So NO double-click on the icon or choosing the simple ‘Run’ !

Selecting the icon and doing the ‘Run as administrator’ is the ONLY way to ensure a good installation !

Hi Michael-

Thanks for putting your name on the crash reports, I was able to find them easily.

There was a bug in version 14.0.24210.0 of the C++ runtime libraries, which Microsoft then fixed in version 14.0.24215 and later. I confirmed in your crash report that you have that problem version.

We believe that the fix for this is to go into Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Uninstall all versions of Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable. Then reinstall SketchUp. Be sure to run the installer “as administrator” as others have said, which should allow it to install a newer version of the C++ redistributable.

Alternately, you can download and install the “Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable” directly from Microsoft.

Thanks,
Marc

Hi Marc,

Thank you.

…question, however…when I download Sketchup, I have not seen an option to run as administrator. When the download is complete, the Sketchup icon, Layout and Style Builder are all on my desk top. I can right click and open as administrator, but I appear to be missing something important in the download process? The download process is essentially, open, run, click continue a few times, install then finish…

And forgive me, Although I have made up a lot of time with computers, I only moved away from my pencil 5 years ago.

Your help is much appreciated!!

When you downloaded the SU program, you got an .EXE file. That is the installer file people are referring to here. That file orchestrates the program installation - including the examination of your machine for missing components and will ping MS to download and install those required components.

Because of malevolent hackers and such, since Windows Vista, the operating system wants to be sure a responsible human is allowing system changes when installing new programs. And while there are proper times and places to be logging onto your computer in an elevated Administrator account, the K.I.S.S. principal is advocated here: open your usual, user account on your computer > r-click on the .EXE file and choose the option to Run as administrator.

As SU is already installed (by another technique and noted by the presence of desktop icons), re-running the installer will result with a dialog that gives the option to do a repair installation. The repair installation will ensure the computer user has adequate permission to access some OS files and OKs changes to the registry.

So remove all VC++ installations as mentioned above. Then r-click on the SU .EXE file > Run as administrator > perform a program repair.

And for the avoidance of doubt… the installer’s exe file is most likely in your Downloads folder…

Hello Marc,

I have an additional question…There are two 2015 Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable versions in my computer - .x64.exe and .x86.exe Should both of these version exist? Additionally, the download from Microsoft gives me a choice between .x64.exe and .x86.exe

There are about a dozen visual C++ versions in my computer beginning with year 2012…

Thank you again,

Michael

Don’t worry about the parallel bit-ness versions, some apps might need the other ones.
Leave it be.
Also having several versions is not normally an issue, provided that you also have the correct version for this particular app…

SketchUp 2017 is 64-bit, which means that it specifically loads the x64 version of the redistributable. It’s fine to have other, older versions around - I do not recommend removing/reinstalling anything else in case other programs still need the older library versions.

As he said above, (for this issue and SketchUp 2017,) we are only concerned with the 2015 versions…

Okay…there are two. I really appreciate the combined help, thank you. Just one last question and I think that it is important…I do not remember being given a choice to RUN as Administrator…or perhaps I missed this as this is typically a choice for most downloads…

Michael

After clicking on the download link, choose to Save it and not run it. (Or right-click the link and choose “Save” from the popup context menu.)

[It’s hard to know unless you tell us what browser you are using to get the installer packages with.]

Once the installer file is downloaded to your “Downloads” folder, then you open that folder (by various ways) and you then right-click that file, and choose “Run as administrator” from the context menu.

Thank you all! Sketchup works again!

I got the same problem like you.
did you get the any solution about sketch up pro?

Freddy have you updated your graphics driver ?
Have you set SketchUp to use your GTX850 GPU via the Nvidia Control Panel ?

If you’re a software developer, like me, then there is a good chance you cannot get the 2015 redist installed. If you check the setup log it will say something like like “Cannot install due to a newer version already installed”. At the point, check if you have 2017 redist installed. If you, uninstall it, then install the 2015 redist, then reinstall 2017 redist for whatever application was using it (for me this is MSVS 2017),

SketchupCheckup will not run if you have this issue so ignore anyone that says to download it and run it. It relies on the same libs that Sketchup does, so if one will not run, the other won’t either.

Don’t forget to reinstall any redists that you remove or your build tools won’t work.
