Sketchup Layout not Showing Section Plane or Guidelines

Newby here. When importing a file from Sketchup into Layout the section plane does not show up in the floor plan; I can see it as a shaded plane in some views but not the actual lines…

Share the LO file so we can see what you’ve set up.

What rendering method are you using? Is the section plane larger than the viewport?

In order to display the section plane the style for the scene must have it Section Plane display enabled and the viewport in LayOut must be rendered as Raster or Hybrid. Section plane lines are not displayed with Vector rendering. The viewport needs to be larger than the section plane, too.

Make sure in your Style, or create a new style if you don’t want the section to show everywhere…Check that ‘Section Plane’ is enabled. Also make sure to update the style at the top - if you see the two circular arrows that is. Then the changes are saved.

You can also change the section plan color here as well.

And the section shows, and is red, here in LayOut.

I did not know that. I think that’s weird as it’s implying that the section line is rendered as an image and not geometry. Hmmm. I think one ought to be able to see section lines in Vector mode. A section line shouldn’t be a big performance drag or anything.

I guess you can always replace them with a scrapbook cut…but those wouldn’t be associative if the cut moved. Hmmm…so many ideas on how to improve…head…might…explode.

Like back edges and guides, Section plane linse are a raster thing. Since Vector rendering doesn’t display raster content … Maybe that shouldn’t be the case but it is what is at least for now.

Well, I am following a sequence of video instruction from Sketchup School, and the file is supplied as a model for study and exploration work. I will show a screen shot of the two things together: the video instruction and my version so you can see the difference.

I replied above to DaveR. I do have the section plane checked on, but it shows as a faint grey plane rather than a line with lable or arrow

Wasn’t there a bug not too long ago about this?

My version of SUP Pro 2024 seems to have a slightly different interface, but when I open the sketchup file and left click open the entity info of a non-labeled faded section plane the info box shows some toggle options but only the eye (see/hide) seeems to have any affect. It may be that I need to complete the whole suite of instructional files to understand the Section plane better!

Interestingly, anotehr issue I am having is that I cannot seem to create a guideline now- I was in the past once- with the tape or protractor, and its not the on/off guidlines toggle issue. But weirdly in the icon representations of the files on the open file menu seems to show the many guidelines that are apparently invisible when the file is opened!

Can you upload your file here or dm if you don’t want to share publicly and we can take a closer look?

There is one above in my reply to DaveR

Got it, well it’s displaying properly for me. I wish I could tell you more what the issue might be but it’s related to your OS or install. You may want to try SUv2025 that just launched and see if that resolves it.

Reset the camera and the vertical section planes in the model won’t be displayed.

@natebaba you didn’t specify that you were wanting to see inactive sections edge on. As @bmike indicated, there is a bug related to that which still doesn’t appear to be fixed in LO 2025. Active section planes will be displayed as I showed in my screenshots the other day.

Okay, I am updating to the newest SU version

I updated to the newest version of SU. Here you can see that the SU icon for Tape Measure for Guidelines has lots of guidelines shown, while when I was trying to place guidelines they would disappear on the click that should create them. You can see that both the section plane and guidelines are turned on.

In your second image you aren’t showing guidelines, those are back edges. Tap K and they will not be displayed.

you misunderstand, I am saying that there are no guidelines showing, i cannot get them to show. But if you look at the icon for this file above, all of the attempts at placing them actually show…

Go into Settings under the SketchUp menu to the Left of File. In Settings go to Graphics and switch to the Classic graphics engine. Then quit and restart SketchUp. The graphics card you indicate in your forum profile does not support the newer graphics engine. After you go back to the Classic graphics engine the guides should show.

DaveR! You have embodied your moniker!! That was the hitch, thank you!
