I’m trying to import a 3D model from Vectorworks. I’ve tried a DWG file which worked a bit but none of the textures were imported and some of the 3d models just showed as 2d. I’ve also tried 3ds file, but that will finish importing and sketchup will immediately crash (with bug splat that I have sent off). I tried viewing the 3ds file using an online viewer and it worked fine. Also tried importing with a dae file and that gave me a fail to import error. Tried opening the dae file on a online viewer and it froze my laptop.
I’m using sketchup pro 2021 and Vectorworks 2025.
Do you know how big the file is?
the .3ds file is 508 MB and the .dae file is 1.88 GB
Now you have the answer.
If you were to try to open such a large SKP file and there are possible problems with certain computers, you realize what it means with a file you import.
Try using one of the extensions created specifically for such files:
- Universal Importer;
- Skimp;
- Transmutr.
Or export in smaller pieces, not the whole model at once.
thanks
I ended up having to split the file into 4 and I imported it through Transmutr as a 3ds file. So I can now get each file into sketchup and save it, but as soon as I try to do anything with the file when open sketchup crashes.
