Sketchup 2026 unselectable group bug

Hi there, I’ve recently moved from sketchup 2024 to sketchup 2026 and I’ve encountered a strange bug while modelling where sometimes my grouped object becomes unselectable. I’ve encountered this problems quite a few times, and it usually happens the same way.

  1. I’m currently in a group or nested group, I right click to make a new group.
  2. I create geometry in the new group, make adjustments.
  3. After leaving/closing the group, the geometry is visible, but is totally unselectable. I cannot click to select it, cannot drag select. I can no longer edit it.
  4. The only way to remove it is to use the command select all, then painstakingly unselect everything else until it is the only object remaining, then press delete to remove it.

Has anyone else encountered this bug? I’ve never encountered this bug before in sketchup 2024.

sketchup pro version: 26.1.189 64 bit

I’ve uploaded a video to demonstrate the bug: https://youtu.be/hmk8jm18TZo

Can you select it using the Outliner tree?

Indeed it’s a weird thing but I see Dan is replying so I’ll leave it to him.

I selected it via Outliner after hiding everything else. Strangely the bounding box is shown a long way from the frame.

I exploded it via Outliner and remade it as a component giving it a name so it can be identified. After that there’s no problem selecting and editing it.

I’ve never run into this myself but then I don’t start an object by choosing Make Group or Make Component. I always create the geometry first, select it, and then create the object.

I checked the Release Notes for SketchUp 26.1.2 but I did not see any specific fix for a bug like this. You might update anyway to get the benefits of other fixes.

The displaced bounding box probably is the reason for unselectablility.

This has happened in recent versions. I thought @colin has logged this bug?

Thank you for your suggestion. I can indeed select the group and delete via outliner (normally I don’t use outliner). I can now fix the problem by selecting the group in outliner, exploding it, and making a new group.

For now I think I’ll have to change my workflow to create geometry first then group later until there’s a fix for this.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Yes, good, but the displaced bounding box bug still needs fixing.

There was a bounding box issue fixed in 2026.0, which should be in the version you’re using. I don’t see the issue when I try your model.

Although there weren’t more bounding box issues fixed recently, you might as well update to the latest version, it has several useful fixes in it. You can choose Check for Update from the Help menu, to get the latest version.

This seems to be a regression to a bug that was in 2025 web version.
