SketchUp 2025 does not save toolbar positions, shortcuts, or default template

Hi everyone,

I am having a problem with SketchUp 2025. It does not seem to save any of my workspace settings or preferences after I close the application.

Each time I open SketchUp again, it behaves like a completely new installation. The following settings are not retained:

  • Extension and plugin toolbar positions
  • Docked toolbar layout
  • Custom keyboard shortcuts
  • Selected default template
  • Other workspace preferences

After installing extensions, I arrange their toolbars and dock them around the SketchUp interface. However, the next time I launch SketchUp, the extension toolbars appear floating in the modeling area instead of remaining in their previously docked positions.

I also assign custom keyboard shortcuts and select or save a default template, but these settings are lost after restarting SketchUp. I have to configure everything again every time I open the program.

I am using:

  • SketchUp version: SketchUp 2025
  • Operating system: [Windows version]
  • Installation type: [SketchUp Pro/Desktop]

Has anyone experienced this issue?

Could this be related to Windows permissions, the SketchUp preferences file, registry settings, or SketchUp being unable to write to the user configuration folders?

I would appreciate any advice on how to make SketchUp save the toolbar layout, keyboard shortcuts, template, and other preferences permanently.

Thank you.

Yes it could. I would recommend that you locate your downloaded SketchUp installer, right-click on it and select “Run as administrator” from the popup menu. When the installer dialog opens, select the Repair option.
Note too that for some settings changes to stick, you must save the currently open model file - quitting without saving discards your settings changes.
