Sketchup 2023 not saving as 2023

Hi Guys, I’m new to forums and I need your help. I have recently upgraded to Sketchup 2023 and I’m having issues with saving files. When I go to File, Save (or Save as), my options in the drop down are: "SketchUp Models (.skp)" or "SketchUp 2020(.skp) or any of the other older versions but no option for 2023. I can save the file but when I try to re-open (if I right click) the pop up says (at the top) Sketchup 2020. If I try to “Open with” my options are “search the microsoft shop” or “choose another app”. Even the saved icon looks more like an icon for wordpad and nothing similar to what I am used to with previous versions.

My previous version was 2020 (I have uninstalled that and any other previous version) and in the past I was able to click on the icon of any of my models and it would open. Now, to open old models, I have to open Sketchup 23 and go to the “Open File” button. Even new models created in 2023 give me the same problem when I try to re-open from the icon…

Please help guys, this is driving me insane.

Any models created in SketchUp 2021 or later have the same file type so the version is not important anymore. Just saving it as a SketchUp file is enough. The only reason you would need to choose a different version would be so that it can be opened in 2020 or some earlier version.

This is a different issue. It has to do with the file association by the operating system. Some users have just opted to remove SketchUp 2020 and clean up the registry to sort this out. It hasn’t been a problem on my machine.

Hi Dave

Thanks for responding. Please take a look at the png attached. It’s a snapshot of the skp icon of a model I made in skp 2023 which I then saved to my desktop. Is the icon supposed to look like that?

All your other info, thanks — understood. I will have to get my IT guys to help me with that.

No. It looks like you didn’t install SketchUp 2023 correctly or that you’ve somehow balled up the file association. Close SketchUp and LayOut. Find the Downloaded installer in your Downloads folder. Right click on it and choose Run as administrator. Then, when prompted, choose Repair.

This is what a SketchUp file looks like on my desktop.

If you get the document properties (a fast way to do that is to Alt-double-click on the file), there will be a “Type of file” entry. What does it show for that file?

If it says SketchUp 2023 (skp), it may be that your system icon cache needs to be refreshed:

Wilco Dave. I’ll give that a shot. Thanks

Colin, This is what I get… SketchUp 2020 (.skp)

That is curious, you would think Windows would point to the latest SketchUp, though there is an old issue where several versions of SketchUp would all claim to be an older version.

If Dave’s suggestion doesn’t fix things you could go into the system settings to set which application looks after .skp files, and point that to SketchUp 2023.

Thanks Collin. I’ll give that a shot too. Tried Dave’s suggestion but no luck. I’ll keep at it … thanks guys.

You may have to refresh the OS to straighten this out, but there is only a 50/50 chance it will work.

Yip, will get my IT guys involved. I will post the result once they are done. For the meanwhile, I’m back on Skp 2020 which is ok for me… for now.
