I bought sketch up pro 2014 in 2014 and it has worked fine until a few days ago when I downloaded Catalina On my Mac. I don’t use it very much so don’t want to run to a new annual subscription but just simply want to continue with my old one as before. Does anyone have anyone have any recommendations
SketchUp has only supported Catalina with the recent 19.3 release (last Oct 14th.)
SketchUp 2014 only supported OS X 10.7 (Lion), 10.8 (Mountain Lion) and 10.9 (Mavericks.)
The only recommendation is to either update to a paid Pro version that supports Catalina, or:
a) use the Fee web edition.
b) subscribe to use the paid Shop web edition (119/yr)
c) subscribe as you need to the Pro license (currently 299/yr)
The last free desktop version is 2017 Make but it supports only OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), 10.11 (El Capitan) and 10.12 (Sierra).
Or … perhaps also run 2017 Make on an older OS version (say Sierra) on Parallels (etc.)
Did you reinstall or just migrated the prior installation?
What parts aren’t working?
I believe SU v14 contains 32-bit binaries and Catalina is exclusively 64-bit…
>> About This Mac >> System Report >> Software >> Applications has a 64-bit column on earlier mac OS’s versions…
I don’t have v14…

Hi Mike,
My son installed Catalina without asking me so there was no pre-preparation or anything. Once it was loaded sketch up ceased to work. There are just no entry signs on the sketch up logo so I cannot open it let alone use it☹️

Like @john_drivenupthewall I can’t find my old installation of SketchUp 2014, but I can confirm that Google SketchUp 8 was 32-bit and SketchUp 2015 was 64-bit, so the change to 64-bit must have happened either in 2013 or an update to 2014. But regardless, if 32-bit is the issue, one will see a dialog pop up saying so when attempting to run an old 32-bit app.
…which is why a lot of us have to hang back at Mojave or earlier so we can still run whatever older 32 apps we still have.
You can’t easily find a Mojave installer directly in the Mac App store, but technical notes can point you to the right download page. I’m not sure what happens if you try to downgrade.
If you want 2014 for testing
Thanks for the links, @Box. Going there I got the 2014 Mac installer and confirmed that SketchUp 2014 on Mac was still 32-bit. So, it definitely won’t run on Catalina.
Edit:
Your two choices are either to revert from Catalina to an older macOS version or to upgrade to a newer SketchUp version. You didn’t state whether you use it for business or personal, but if the latter, SketchUp Make 2017 is still available for free and is 64-bit. There may be some glitches running under Catalina, but for the most part it is ok.
Thank you all for your useful advice
If you only using SketchUp, and just for personal use, getting SketchUp Make 2017 would be another option. It’s 64 bit, and seems to work ok in Catalina.
Also could be worth checking to see if you have a later version license.
