I have a model of an interior with the ceiling on. I wanted to get the 2d graphic of just the shadows. I turned on Hidden Line style and shadows, turned off edges and profiles. I played around with different UTC times but all I get is a whole white or grey screen, never one with detailed shadows of furniture. Can you please help me with this? @eric-s
I frequently do this sort of thing with no problem. Can you share the .skp file so we can see what you are working with?
By the way, what operating system and graphics card are you using? That infdormation may play into the solution. Please complete your forum profile.
This is what I see with the face style set to Hidden Line with edges and profiles turned off and shadows on.
I can’t seem to insert the file, it’s too large.
Upload it to DropBox or We Transfer and share the link.
OK. So if you want the sun to shine in and create shadows you need to turn off the tag for the ceiling since it is blocking the sun. You also need to change the UTC offset to match the the geo-location of the model. Since you are using the default location of Boulder, Colorado, the UTC offset should be -7:00 not the +5:30 you have in your shadow settings.
Here’s what I see after making those corrections.
I also fixed incorrect tag usage and then purged unused stuff from your model.
There are also a couple of extremely large material images which I reduced. This reduced the file size by 93%.
Store interior 1 fixed shadows.skp (4.7 MB)
Thank you SO MUCH! The fact that I’ve only been using Sketchup for like a month now probably explains well enough where all those issues come from.
Let me just ask you about a few things from you reply:
- How to check the set geolocation of my model? How do I know it’s Boulder, Colorado?
- How to purge unused stuff from a model?
- How to reduce large material images?
Model Info>Geo-location. Click on Set Manual Location. You can edit that if you want to put in your local latitude and longitude. Then also edit the UTC offset in the Shadows panel to suit the location.
Window>Model Info>Statistics>Purge Unused. I use a plugin to do the same thing because it gives the report I showed.
I use an extension called Material Resizer which is available from the Extension Warehouse.
That makes sense, thanks for all the help!
