I like the ability of SU to distinguish objects and group them like roads. Is there any other software that does the same?
Or better yet, can SketchUp do this for other file types?
Thanks.

I don´t know what do you mean by “group them like roads” but you can import some file types into sketchup, the free web version is limited to a few file types but the desktop version can import to almost all the non propietary 3D files and some plugins add more file types to the native ones.
I mean create tags for roads, buidings, etc.
So on desktop version, can SketchUp do such things as finding tags each a section of say, roads, topography, roads, etc, like the online version does for SKU files?
Yes… you can make up any tags you wish.
But you should learn how to use groups and components - and then only assign groups or components to tags.
You can download a free trial of the desktop / pro version.
So I onl use SketchUp for 3D models of cities and landscape. The groupings/ /tags are identofied automatically. So that tag automatic generation of tags will work on the desktop with other file types, like STL, blender, OBJ, etc, for roads and topography?
Thanks
There is no automatic generation of tags in any version of SketchUp. If the models you are working with have tags associated with certain geometry they were put there by the person or process that made the model. Where are you getting the cities and landscapes you are working with? SketchUp Pro desktop has different options for working with tags that allow more advanced workflows than the free version supports, but the basic function and use of tags is the same across all versions. If you can explain a bit more of your process start to finish, where you get the models, how you work with the geometry, what you are trying to accomplish, you will get better more focused advice here.
I bought SKU models on CGTrader. They are of cities. Opened up in SU the tags are all determined.
So it’s up to the creator of the file to add the tags?
Yes, those tags were created and associated with certain geometry in your file by whoever made it for CGTrader. A new fresh file contains no tags, tags are created, named and attached to groups and components in the model by the user.
Yes, as I already mentioned. You can make whatever tags you want.
