Scan Essentiel pop-up message

Every time I open a file with a Point Cloud associated to it, I get this message:

“The current SketchUp model is associated to a different Point Cloud project. Do you want to create a link between the current SketchUp project and the selected point cloud?” - Yes or No

Is anybody can explain me what it means? I don’t really understand it.

  • The file is a e57 initially that has been converted to rwp when I first opened it.
  • The file has only one PC associated to it.
  • The PC is associated only to this file.
  • I moved and rotated the PC into the file. Maybe that’s why he thinks it’s a '“different” PC project?

Anybody has an idea?

Cheers,

Hi,

From what I understand this is not the expected behaviour. Some potential explanations to this:

  • you moved the skp and/or the rwp in your folders
  • you never associated your point cloud with your skp by answering yes to this question
  • a bug

We recently noticed a bug regarding the linked point cloud. It’s sometimes seen as none even if there is indeed a linked point cloud. We will investigate on this part and try to reproduce your bug.

Note that when opening a file with a point cloud associated to it, you should have a message but not this one. More something like "This SketchUp model is linked to a Point Cloud project. Do you want to load …” + Yes/No

Could you open the console (Extensions > Developer > Ruby console) and type Sketchup.active_model.get_attribute(SUPCP::TSE_PCP_ATTRIBUTE, SUPCP::TSE_RWP_ATTRIBUTE)
You will have access to the currently stored path of your project.

  • If it’s nil it means you have no linked point cloud. For this you need to add the point cloud link and save the skp.
  • If it corresponds to another point cloud, you need to open the one you want, update the link and check with this formula it updated correctly.
  • If it’s the correct one, it should work correctly.

Best,
YS

I do have a message when I open the file:

“This SketchUp model is linked to a Point Cloud project. Do you want to load E:/xxxxxxxx.rwp?” Yes - No

I click yes. It loads the PC, then I get the second message: “The current…” I’m sorry I didn’t mentioned it. I toke it for grant.

  • I didn’t move or rename the PC source folder.
  • I associated the PC by answering yes every time I opened the file.
  • I tried answering no, unlinked and reload/relink it and I still get the message.
  • I tried your Ruby Code, and the path is the correct one.
  • Note that I have this message on every file with a PC for more than a year now. When I wrote that thread, I didn’t know it was a bug, I was just wondering what the message meant. I guess it would make sense if I load a different PC from the one I previously associate with the file but I get this message on every cases. Even the most simpler setup: One file, with one PC.

We’ll investigate closer on this. I read a bit the code and I cant find why this is behaving this way.
Just a quick remark, your path starts with E: is it a path to an unusual drive (shared ? google drive ? anything else ?)
Also, what version of Scan Essentials are you using ?

E= It’s a 2TB local drive and my work data folder on it is sync with Dropbox.

TSE: 1.2025.1013

Thanks. If you have the time to test the same thing with a skp + a cloud on a fixed drive (C or D) that would help us. Otherwise we’ll do the tests next week.
(there are light sample clouds here https://help.sketchup.com/en/scan-essentials-sketchup/sample-point-cloud-data if your clouds are too heavy)
Thanks

Ok, I’ll run more test when I have a minute. The E drive is a 2TB local drive installed in my tower by the way. It synced to Dropbox, but I can switch the sync off or simply close Dropbox and run some test.

Thanks for your support.

ok, I just ran some tests. I tried many different situations and in every one, the message appears when the PC is on E drive and not appearing when the PC is on C drive. Hummmm!

One thing for sure, I can’t have my PC on C drive. There’s just not enough room for that. My C drive is a small SSD drive only used for OS and System.

My E drive is a Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB (M2 NVMe) and my work folder where I keep my PC is synced with Dropbox. Note that I closed Dropbox for my tests.

Just to be clear, when I’m using the abbreviation PC, I mean Point Cloud.

Also, this might be a bug to fix, but it’s not a show stopper in any way. I just need to click yes every time and I’m good to go. So if this bug is never fixed, it’s not a big deal, at least for me.

Thanks again for your support.

Thanks a lot for your tests. We have all our point clouds stored locally that’s why we missed this bug. We’ll work on this specific workflow in the future to avoid this kind of bug.

I get this all the time and now I know why

All our point cloud are saved on our (local - not cloud) server.

As JoeDrafter said it’s just annoying and slightly confusing.
