Revit Import

Hola -

I’ve been provided a Revit file to bring into Sketchup but when I attempt to import it, I receive the error message :

The version of the Revit file is not supported.

Whether this is accurate or not I do not know.

The file was provided by a retired architect whose computer skills are not the best. I start by asking: is a 19Mb Revit file typical? That’s what I have. I believe SU supported Revit 2011 to the present. I know the building he designed was done in 2009, so there could be the issue.

Does anyone use Revit? I may be able to get my hands on it and try to export the file for Sketchup … any tips?

TIA

Sketchup does indeed import Revit files pretty faithfully directly into SU. The size of your file shouldn’t be a problem - (i’ve successfully imported far bigger ones), but there may have been something in the Revit file you were given that is causing the error. One of the issues I’ve encountered in the past is if I’ve been given the Master file, and sometimes I’ve had to go into Revit and re-save them as local files before importing into Sketchup. If you’re able to check that with whoever sent you the rvt file, that may be worth checking first. Otherwise if you’re able to share the rvt file, I’d be happy to check it through for you.

What version of SketchUp are you using? What operating system. Your profile appears to be extremely out of date and incomplete.

I’m not a huge Sketchup user but I’ve had it from back in Google days. I’m on Sketchup Pro 2025. I use it semi-frequently for customer site plans that are initially created in PTC Creo but the level of detail from Creo makes building-size layouts a bit unusable. I like that an OBJ>Blender>STL file into SU makes a more approachable drawing.

Regarding the issue, I’ve never used Revit and don’t have it. I plan on visiting the creator of the file next week and trying my hand at getting something useable out of Revit. Unfortunately, I will likely be beyond the 7-day Studio trial license.

You need an Studio License to be able to import Revit files, the pro license can’t import rvt files, no matter the version of it. You can ask your friend to export from Revit as an ifc file, you don’t need the studio version for that.

I’m on the 7-day Studio trial… now 6 days.

Apparently he had Revit 2015 - which the Google machine said should be compatible.
