I’m curious about why Sketchup & Layout continuously ask me if I want to open a “recovered” file. I understand that these recovered files happen after splats or other such blunders. what I don’t understand is that if I use the recovered file after a splat and then save it back to the original file in my system, it would be logical that I don’t need that recovered file. Yet, even a year later, if I open a file that is connected to a “recovered” file I get the pop-up asking if I would prefer to open the recovered file.
Main question then is how do I clear these recovered files after I have finished with them? Is there a purge function for the recovered file vault in Sketchup and Layout?
You can manually go to where those files are stored, and delete the files you don’t need. Or, you can open the recovered file from welcome screen and you will be asked whether you want to open the recovered file or the main working file. If you choose the main working file the recovered one is deleted.
In the case where you open the latest saved file and see the dialog saying that the recovered file is more recent, it seems like the recovered one is not deleted, perhaps because when you look at the last saved file you will realize the recovered one had some useful changes in it.
On Mac, if you want to look at the files and decide which ones you really need, you can go to Finder, Go, Go to Folder, and paste in this text:
didn’t know that first part. Hadn’t seen that behavior. Seemed like the recovered file stuck around even when I chose the working file. Will keep that in mind.
Thanks for the folder address, that really helped the most.
The folder is different in LayOut, instead of seeing a set of .layout files you see the expanded version of the document. This folder will include some number of folders, including one for each open document. So be careful to make sure LayOut is closed before checking for recovery files:
