Question about using the Smoove tool on a topo

Hello!

I need some advice on how to use the Smoove tool on a topo built from contours. I already have a solid topo.

What I’m trying to do is open the group, select the top surface I want to edit, and then apply the Smoove tool. However, when I do this, the Smoove tool selects the entire object and moves it up and down as a whole, instead of affecting only the specific points I want to adjust.

What is the correct way to use the Smoove tool in this case?

Thank you!

What are the dimensions of the topo object? What’s the set radius of the Smoove tool?

Oh, hello again, Dave! The topo object is 140 ft by 300 ft approximately. And the radius of the Smoove tool was set as 1 ft.

Set the radius to something reasonable for the size of the terrain. Maybe start with a radius of 20 feet.

Also make sure you are reading the radius correctly and that the circle isn’t larger than the terrain. Here I’ve done that.

I count 24 endpoints (in yellow) for the 140 feet side. This means that the spacing between endpoints is 140’/24 or 5’ 10” between endpoints. Your 1 foot radius is quite small. Try a larger radius.

No, unfortunately this is not the reason. I have experimented with different sizes and it is not the issue.

No, unfortunately this is not the problem. I have tried 20-25-30 ft. In fact, I don’t even see the circle of the radius in my file.

Is the topo object a group or component? Are you working in the proper context?

here it is!

hi! According to the entity info it is a solid group. Is it good?

When I opened your file and activated the Smoove Tool I get a radius of around 833’. Much larger than your terrain. That would exploain why you don’t see the circle and why when you start to use the tool all of the vertices show in yellow.

Here I set the radius to 50 feet.

And with that 50’ radius the selected vertices look like this.

I had no problem using the Smoove tool. As Dave said, select a radius proportionate to the moves you want to make. Note that in your model, if you type a number and press Enter, the number is recorded as Inches. You can change this behaviour in Model Info>Units. I used a radius of 30 feet by typing 30’ (including the feet symbol.

As long as you double click to edit it before you start using the smoove tool. But terrain doesn’t need to be a solid to use the smoove tool, I often work on flat planes in my models.

Can I have a stupid question? The order was the following: You opened the file, then you opened the group (topo) to edit it and select the Smoove tool, right? You didn’t select the top surface additionally before the smoove tool?

Correct. I didn’t select the geometry within the object. I just opened it for editing. And I selected a reasonable radius for the Smoove tool.

got it! Thank you very much! Appreciate your help a lot!

I just recently had the same problem and no, it wasn’t the radius of the Smoove tool … I would eventually get it to work by clicking off of the selected group and then clicking on an area the top, or something. I never could figure out what reliably made it behave … Not much help, but I wanted to let you know you are not alone in fighting with the Smoove Tool. Are you on a Mac or PC?
