This is a question that’s been asked a lot of times. I’ve read the posts/answers, I’ve watched YouTube, I’ve played around with the tool and yet I still can’t get it to work.
What I want to do is really basic. I just want to create an object in this shape. I create a rectangle and push/pull it to correct size. Then I draw the shape of the object on the front face. Lastly, I want to use push/pull to eliminate everything outside of the shape.
No matter what I try, I can’t get it to work. Some posts mention pressing the Ctrl key before the push/pull. That only adds what looks like another object in the direction of the push.
It’s probably something so simple you experts will shake your head at the question, but I’m really stuck. Any help is appreciated.
Draw the shape you want, delete any other faces, then use push/pull on the single face.
If you push/pull a face that is within another face it won’t do what you want.
Box has given the best answer. But it’s also worth noting that you can “heal” or replace any face as long as the loop of edges are coplanar by simply tracing over one single edge in the loop with the edge tool. So you could “rescue” the shape you show by drawing one line with the pencil on an existing edge.
You only need your desired shape. Delete the rest of that stuff. Then you can push/pull the shape to the desired depth. Also, maybe weld all the edges of your shape so that the pushed-pulled result doesn’t have all those lines on the sides.

Could you please give me more details on this? I don’t understand how to do this.
That’s right, but sometimes it requires zooming in and “tracking” the edge, often it’s better to draw a segment and delete it. I will add that it is enough to draw a short segment on any edge, you do not need to draw from vertex to vertex.
Can you clarify what “tracking” means in this context? Is that a tool or a general term for some (set of) action(s)? Earlier someone mentioned tracing.
Not that I’m entirely sure what tracing means either. Just trying to understand if they’re the same thing when I’m doing further research
Thanks for the discussion. Enjoying “talking” to other users and the civility here. Not like a lot of other software forums.
