I was hoping that the pop-up box to purge your model before closing in the latest version meant that the crashing issue had been solved, but almost everytime I purge my model (multiple models), SketchUp still crashes. Please help.

When SketchUp crashes do you get a Bug Splat? Are you sending in the Bug Splat report with something that identifies it came from you?
Thanks for the prompt response
I often send in the Bug Splat report, but its been happening so often that I don’t always. I will make sure to send in all future Bugsplats.
I’ve also been having major issues with Enscape crashing and sometimes having Sketchup crash with it also. I just was following their instructions also for a clean reinstall. I am using the latest version of both programs. I have a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080.
I tried to upload file here but it is too big. Whats the best alternative to sending it to you?
Diane
Whose instructions?
Please update your forum profile.
Upload it to DropBox and share the link.
I was reinstalling Enscape as I am also having crashes when running Enscape. Just as an FYI, I also have tried uninstalling and reinstalling SketchUp several times while troubleshooting.
I just tested again and tried to close the file which led to SketchUp crashing. I did not get a BugSplat error box to submit, which I realized has been the norm in the last day during these crashes.
Here is the file:
Also, I am not seeing on my profile where to include my graphics card…if you can please direct me, I can update. Thanks
When you installed/reinstalled SketchUp did you right click on the installer and select Run as administrator?
Have you tried uninstalling Enscape and then trying to purge the model? Others have reported crashes related to Enscape.
Click on the blue circle with the D in it at the top right corner of the forum page. Then click on the Person icon followed by Preferences and Profile. Put in the SketchUp license type, SketchUp version, update the operating system if it’s not still Windows 10, and put in the new graphics card information. Scroll to the bottom and click on the button to save the changes.
I’ll look at your file.
I had no trouble purging your model. I used TIG’s Purge All because it presents this report to show what was purged.
I also checked the materials and see a few excessively large material images. There’s no point in inserting those huge images as materials (or as images) because SketchUp will downsample them anyway. The excess file size only creates bloat.
That little bit of cleanup I did reduced the model file size by 72%.
The purged file is small enough to upload directly.
WM 5.5 .3 PURGED.skp (15.6 MB)
So, is it normal for SketchUps “purge before closing” tool to cause a crash?
What is the best / fastest way to check all the material sizes? Is there a way to reduce their sizes within Sketchup or do I need to use PS / etc?
Thanks!
Diane
No. It’s only calling the native Purge Unused which you can do from Model Info>Statistics. I used Purge All because, as I wrote, it gives the report showing how much was purged. You should be purging more often so you don’t wind up with 400 unused components in the model.
As I showed, I used Material Resizer. It shows the texture image sizes and quickly resizes the ones you select. Best practice, though, would be to make sure they are properly sized before importing them in the first place.
Did you find the place to edit your forum profile?
Thanks so much. I did not find were to add this information to my profile.
But that purging info is interesting, as I was using Purge Unused each time that I closed the model, which was often since it was crashing so much. I had tried to use Statistics / purge which was also causing crashing. Is this a normal behavior with SketchUp?
Try doing what I told you. Click on the D in the blue circle at the top right of the forum page. Then the person icon, then Preferences, then Profile.
Again, no, it’s not normal behavior.
Does the fact that purge continually makes it crash indicate another deeper issue that needs to be solved?
Although I did just install Purge all also.
I also tried to install Material Resizer and got an error message stating “this extension is marked as being not compatible with your operating system or SketchUp Version. Proceed anyway?”
I run Windows 11 and the latest version of SketchUp. Any thoughts if its’ ok to “proceed anyway?”
Probably it does. I expect it’s something to do with your system or the installation of SketchUp. Did you install it correctly? That requires right clicking on the installer and selecting Run as administrator.
Where is the file saved while you are working on it?
Yes. It’s fine to install it.
I don’t remember being prompted to run the download program as administrator. Or would I have to right-click unprompted at some point>
My files are saved on a local NAS.
Yes. You would have to do that unprompted.
Save the file to your internal drive and then try purging. Does it still crash?
So, as I was trying to uninstall SketchUp, it got hung up on an error message saying “COM surrogate needs to be disabled”> See attachement.
I got this error code also yesterday and found information on how to disable it in Windows. i disabled and was able to load SketchUp. Now I see that error code again and am doing more research which revealed there is also a surrogate Com virus which I am trying to remove.
You must have a slow day there with your quick reply times…
Actually, I didn’t disable it, I used Task manages to “end task”
Is it “safe” to end COM Surrogate from Task Manager? - Microsoft Community
Do a cold reboot of your computer. You don’t need to uninstall it. After the computer reboots, just right click on the installer, choose Run as administrator, and then choose Repair when it comes up.

That’ll do it, too.
