Projected images are distorted and backwards

Hi!

I’m having some issues when I try to project this label onto the surface… Instead of the entire label being projected, it seems that a portion of the label is being inverted so that it’s mirrored backward on the other side. There’s also some weird stretching of the image happening in places. And each time I try to apply the image texture, I get a different result from the last time, so it’s not happening consistently. Sometimes the label even gets flipped upside-down. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Here are the steps I’m taking to apply the label images:

  • I create a rectangle the same height and circumference as the portion of the jar that I’m trying to wrap the label around
  • I import a JPG of the label as a texture and apply it to the rectangle (the JPG is also sized to the same height and circumference)
  • I set that texture to “Projected” and then take a sample with the paint bucket
  • I double-click on my beauty product jar so that all of the faces are selected and apply my sampled texture to the entire thing

Thank you!!

First, projecting the texture is inappropriate for this. I removed the Projected attribute for the texture. Second, you have the group inverted so it’s solid blue axis is pointing down instead of up. Note near the top of the screenshot. Technically the material is right side up for the orientation of the group.

I removed the texture from the one on the left in your model, corrected the axis orientation and then with the object open for editing, just selected the material from the In Model materials and applied it to the surface.

A note on projecting textures. That does exactly the same thing as if you had a projector putting an image up on a screen. If the screen is angled relative to the projector, the image will be distorted. Obviously that’s not what you want in this case.

Here I’ve set that label material back to Projected and projected it on an angled face. The distoration is more evident here. The guidelines are placed to pass through corners on the h and the i on the texture you placed on the rectangle. Note how they also align with the distorted version on the angled face.

Thank you so much!!! This is super helpful, and I think everything you said makes sense… but I still can’t seem to fix the pink bottle on my own. Can you possibly help me with that one too?

I turned off the Projected setting on the texture, but when I double-click and select all of the faces and paste the texture on the bottle, this is what happens. And I get different results each time, even though I’m doing the exact same thing.

How’s this look?

Let’s try that again.

This looks amazing, Dave! Thank you so much!!

Would you mind explaining how you did this?

Really appreciate your help!! Especially on a Saturday night

Also, do you know why it’s doing this in the rendering now? I need the bottom portion of the bottle to look translucent, similar to the example below
