Problem with dwg importer (was Default material, now solved)

Uh where is it on PC? On Mac I have it but on PC it does not exist anymore. How do I get it back? This material should not be purgeable since it is by far the most important one.

In the Materials panel on the right side just above the eye dropper. It’s always there.

i
Mine shows white and green because that’s my default face colors.

OMG I am blind. I was looking for it like it is on Mac. It used to be in the materials in the past no?

Not on PC.

Huh I guess I wasn’t using it as much on PC vs Mac. I really wish someday the interfaces could be the same between Mac and PC. The materials is so much different on Mac. I prefer on PC how the tools can be locked to the sidebar and fly out only when needed vs Mac where they are just floating around. Thank you again by the way. You are always the most helpful here.

This what the Materials panel in SketchUp 3 looks like. The icon improved but the Default Material was accessed in basically the same place.

You and a lot of people. It would make things much easier for those of us who teach SketchUp, as well. Rumor has it they are working toward that but the code is deep and big changes break stuff so it’s got to be done carefully.

I prefer the Materials panel in Windows, too.

That is understandable. The current 2D DWG exporting is sorta broken currently (80% of the time it works and 20% of the time it exports only 20% of what it should). I wouldn’t want them to break things just to have better tool access.

I doubt that’s related to UI changes since the exporters like that are 3rd party things. Most likely the developer of the 2D dwg exporter needs to fix something.

The 2D exporter is basically a vector screenshot tool. It should export what is visible on your screen, that and nothing else. Can you post a model and a DWG where this is not the case?

Isn’t Sketchup the developer of the 2D dwg exporter? Every Sketchup model I have worked with it happens every once in a while. I have to close Sketchup and re-open. What is visible is not what is exported. I am working thru it like I had to do with the NLS warning thing…Speaking of which the NLS warning thing is back on Mac (took 8+ years to fix and it was fixed and now it is back) . And Styles love to change my section display setting (and hidden lines/odjects) and save it to the style. I would love a lock that does not allow style changes unless I unlock it…And the new window that pops up on save to remind me that it purges. I would love it if I do not ever see that again. I am constantly Cleanup3ing my models so I am mega purged. I have clicked the checkbox like 30 times now…I would love a Sketchup update where they don’t add a single thing and just get rid of all these nuisance things. Also, when working on smaller models things really freak out when drawing lines. Things starting getting off by like super small amounts and start not cleaning up properly. Luckily this is just my 3d printing hobby and the micro errors don’t show up. I swear intersect with model used to work way better like 7 or 8 years ago. I sometimes have to go thru this crazy thing where I draw lines to try to create the plane that it already should with the intersect function. Same goes with importing a DWG. I should be able to draw a single line and it creates the plane but most of the time I have to draw so many lines to create the plan. This used to work way better. I think when the line correction thing was added a while back it messed this up. It is trying to correct something it shouldn’t.

No. The exporters are supplied by a 3rd party.

It feels like it is part of Sketchup and I don’t install it and it has been there forever. If they have not changed anything then something inside Sketchup is messing with the export of DWGs. Probably the new graphics engine since it started happening in version 2024.

Have you tried with the “Classic” engine then? It might be that the new engine is not supported on older graphics cards. I understand that it needs the latest version of something called Metal. I don’t use a Mac so I am not sure. None of the new graphics features export to DWG anyway.
As said before, post a model that has a view that doesn’t export fully.

Window > Model Info > Units > Enable length snapping

Is it checked? If so, uncheck it. Save yourself a custom template with it unchecked.

This helps keep inferences the major thing that positions edge vertices.

I wasn’t check. Angle snapping was but not length.

By the way this is still happening with the new version. PNGs export fine but DWGs no ( I put the png behind the linework/dwg so I have snaps and textures). This happens in every single model. The top is what it thinks is visible and yet when I do a png it exports everything. I have to save and close and re-open Sketchup to get it to export all lines. Pretty embracing since I use a slice thru my house for my floor plans and site. I have become a crazed lunatic trying to always make sure that I have all the info. It exports between 10%-100% on random for some reason. Sometimes it works flawlessly and sometimes no.

Where do I go to post my issues with the highest chance that someone will read them who is developing the software?

in a separate thread. this one is about the default material.

The exporters are still supplied as a module by third parties. Even thought they are shipped with SketchUp, they are not developed by the SketchUp developers.

Yea well if you read thru the thread and who started the thread I am ok with this location for the forum. I am looking for where do I send bugs to? I have several that require closing and re-opening Sketchup.

ok. fine. i’ll rename the thread since it’s been going in a totally direction for month.

if you have crashes, you send the bugsplats.
if you see new bugs, the best way to report them is in a new separate thread, where you document everything, explain what happens, how it looks like, how it should look like, steps to reproduce the bug, even a file that bugs, so other can check.
