Problem with dwg exporter (was Default material, now solved)

DWG exporter not importer…I don’t need help from you. DaveR, DanRathbun, Anssi are all very helpful. You have not contributed to anything other than my frustration.

I also told you how to report bugs like you asked. and I renamed your thread twice so other users know what you’re talking about.

I guess you DID need my help…
and you even read my message and did accordingly, I see you started a new thread for a new issue ! well done !

but fine, your ingratitude and rudeness have been noted.

Dude you started it…You came in here and started with “in a separate thread. this one is about the default material.”…While I was talking to Dave and Dan and Anssi. I started the thread anyways so . Sorry but you have not contributed anything. I am already frustrated with certain parts of the software. Bug splats do not happen on Mac when it just decides to not let me grab corners or push pull. No error reports pop up when it only exports 20% of my drawing into a DWG. If you are here to help, approach it in a way that does not further anger the already frustrated user…I use Sketchup for work and I like things to always work. This DWG exporter thing reminds me of the NLS warning thing that was happening for 8 years and I was here asking for fixs for all 8 years…Its also back on Mac DWG exporter so thats fun… Just in the future please don’t help me. I prefer Dave, Dan, Anssi. Thanks for your time but I am breaking up with you

Are you running latest version on Mac? First release of 25 had this (as well as 24) - I would shortcut to save, then tab to another application, then come back to SKP and all would work fine. I believe this was corrected in the latest release. It is / was a known bug and devs were working on it.

Share the file you are having export issues with. Someone may be able to diagnose it, or someone from the SKP team could be pinged to have the dev team address it.

I understand the texture part, I don’t understand the ‘snaps’ part. A PNG is raster. You aren’t snapping to anything other than the surface of the image… unless you know some trick.

I know you won’t want to hear this - but I moved to using CuricToCad exporter:

It offers lots of control, and has been easy, perfect and accurate for me.

This is a paid extension after the trial for the full set of tools, but it’s worth it. And you appear to be a pro so the cost shouldn’t be an issue for good work.

@bmike thanks for posting the Curic product. had forgotten about that one. Have had a reason to want some kind of .dwg exporter with more control. I haven’t bothered because of the Mac process has usually been a “bland” experience, to be kind.

I’m also on Mac, Curic works great - and it works with your scenes and tags (and you can map tags, something I haven’t needed to do yet) It magically smashes down elevations / sections / etc. into proper CAD files. I recently completed schematic design work on a 4500 sq ft. timber frame home - used Curic to export everything for both the engineer doing the FND and site work as well as the company that is taking on the design / build / fabrication.

I often take on CDs that I do entirely in LO but I have been trying to step away from that part of the process and I had to find better solutions than the included export functions. On of my subcontractors was taking LO files from clients and converting them - he is so relieved that I showed him Curic because he can how get his other clients to do the same.

good to know. Im all LayOut as well. But my customers are millwork shops and need .dwg/.dxf files for machining center imports. having this kind of solution just makes it easier to work with them.
do you know if Curic has produced a .dwg importer? Something that makes converting .dwg layers into an existing tag system simple?

yeah, it’s still there on the latest version, a quick alt+tab solves it. it’s quite inconsistent, sometimes I’ll work an hour with no trouble, sometimes I’ll need to alt+tab every few minutes.
Solid tools for example are a frequent source of problem.

yes. you asked “where to send bugs to” and yes, the best place is “in a separate thread so each issue has a different thread and not a single thread that deals with 10 issues”.
This is not your personal forum, it’s public. meaning other people access it, use it to solve their problems. I’m not here to help just you but anyone with a similar problem in the future.
the best place for any user to find a solution to the XYZ problem is a thread that deals with the XYZ problem. not the FPX problem. is that so odd ?

well looks like it could be related to sections in sketchup. Do you still get the NLS warnings ?

If you don’t want anyone but Dave, Anssi and Dan to answer you, feel free to initiate a private conversation with them.

I haven’t seen that. Might be interesting to ask @curic4su if they can make a reverse CuricToCad.

oh yeah, I tried it in trial when it was released, it’s a good tool for anyone working with autocad on the side.

that would be neat. I wonder how it would deal with multiple lines stacked on each other, each on a separate layer though.
it’s a thing I see on architect’s dwgs, in SU you only get one line, off course, and it’s on one of the tags that were used there.
unless maybe it were to import each tag in a group ? like, tag by tag, each its group, so you still get multiple stacked lines ?

Hi, thanks for your interest!

I’m actually working on exactly that: a DWG/DXF importer for SketchUp that maps CAD layers into SketchUp tags - and optionally groups them by tag to preserve overlapping geometry.

I’d love to hear more about your specific needs or workflows, it’d help me shape the tool better for real use cases.

This is exactly why I was asking. I got a .dwg for a 4000sqft home. Architect I was working with took over the project from another one that got fired. The .dwg was actually well done in that all the geometry was actually well layered, but the only way I could see to translate the layer info into tags was to do it one by one. Grab a set of geometry, one by one mind you, make sure the layers were all matching, then put it all in a group, then create the new tag, then untag the geometry to “untagged”, then tag the group with the sku tag. Long process for a 4000 sq.ft house site plan with terrain.

that would be perfect.
overall, the native importer works. it imports and moves all the layers into tags.
but a way to conserve overlapping geometry without doing it manually like @KeithBrooks says (been there, done that, not a fun way to spend an afternoon…) would be a huge plus.

Oh I haven’t tried tabbing to other apps. That would save a bit of time if it works. Yea latest Mac software because it’s Apple and they do updates pretty good and Version 25.0.659 of Sketchup.

Going to look into Curic. Seems interesting. I could get some line thickness back maybe

So will it export all scenes at once? and I can pick the DWG names? I xref in all my slices and elevations into CAD

Would love if it would create planes out of closed plines! OMG that would be fantastic.
Export Workflow:
Mostly I export to CAD and then I add all my notes etc in AutoCAD Architecture. I slice thru the house for plan views and export sections and elevations. I have to export a dwg and png for elevations to get materials and clickable lines. Would be amazing if somehow it would scale the image to the exported dwg scale but I know that would be a tough one. I have to draw a line on the PNG as best I can then align to the dwg version. Would love the option of stripping all layers Sketchup creates and just all on Zero. I cut sections for Roof plans but its hard to deal with that section layer Sketchup creates.
Import workflow:
For import I usually only import pool and site stuff like roads and hardscaping. Then Sketchup becomes my master after I get the info I need. The line work has become very difficult to close in Sketchup. I have to keep drawing lines to get a closed plane…
