Printing to PDF quality went down w/ ver. 23.1.340

Re: OP, I am having the same issues with the latest SketchUp version that eliminated the “legacy” feature of printing. I have never found a reason to use LayOut either, as it is gearing itself to a full production tool for those people who exist without more “professional” software like Autodesk and Adobe suites, which my employers have always used extensively, meanwhile building a lot of workflows that rely on those skills, not just ho-hum SKP skills. Sure, Layout can do it all, but I have a process for printing to PDF at a scale, using that exported document (that contains an image) to scale a whole series of dpi-undefined images against that dpi-defined image in the PDF, and using scripts (extensions, nee plugins) to export scenes at various style settings and visibility settings (tags, nee layers), and relayering those exported images in Photoshop, InDesign, and Revit. This new version took away that simple power to export that first image that gives me a true scale of my exports. I can even get other people with different view settings to get the same results, so I have a process that gives me more artistic power and style generation and collaboration opportunity than Layout can hope to achieve. Plus, in reality, we are a Revit and AutoCAD firm doing architecture, so communication and process is everything.

My workaround at the moment is currently to stick with 2022 or an early release of 2023 until they bring back the printing dialogs. If that is never, that is fine, because 2016 was fine too. I do nothing now that I didn’t do or couldn’t do in 2016 with equivalent plugins.

Another workaround is to have a very large crosshair shape that goes the full x-y-z of the model extents that you would ever print, and use the “Export > 2D graphic…” option to get a vectorized PDF out that has some content the goes the full size of the scene’s canvas window. From that PDF (which takes a while to export for my complex models) you can use the same scene to export a 2D image at whatever resolution and line scales you want, regaining the power and controls that I feel Layout lacks.

I can’t hate on Layout because I don’t really use it in architectural work. It does things like architectural sets, but when working on what are often multi-building projects with lots of levels of context and dozens of teams all doing their part, a few images from SketchUp for explanation of design early in the process are a tiny drop in the ocean of information. I need something simple, like OP was looking for.

So please SKP gods, please just bring back our legacy methods so we can also work with your latest software efforts and bug fixes.

I feel there are a lot of us in the same boat. It seems you go a lot further with it then I do. Since I farm out my renderings I just need it as a quick printing, that is not to any scale, that I can show the client. I don’t need title blocks or scenes at any scale. I’m just opening the files in 22 now and printing from there. Sucks but that’s the quickest option for me.
