I am reposting this with more information. I need to print a full scale file for a 4 meter complex curve. I would tape the pages together to form the final template. I have reviewed past videos and see that the print setup controls have been removed from Sketchup 2024. I am trying to do this in Layout, but no success. I basically need to scale the output to full size and set up a tiled output. I think Layout should be able to do this. I know that the camera view needs to be in top view, and understand raster vs vector outputs. I would output this to a pdf and then print the final tiles. Thanks in advance for any help.
The Camera also needs to be set to Parallel Projection.
If I were doing this set up a suitable scene in SketchUp. In addition to the model with the curve I would add some index marks to assist with aligning the model on the pages in LayOut (assuming your model has to span multiple pages.) I would set the paper size in LayOut to as large as it will go. I don’t remember what the maximum limit is but it’s probably not 4 meters. Then I would set up the viewport on the first sheet at full scale and showing as much of the viewport as possible. Then duplicate the page, move the viewport to show another part of the viewport, rinse and repeat for as many sheets as needed.
For printing I would export to PDF and either send the file to someone with large format printing capability or use Adobe Reader’s or Acrobat’s Poster Print function to print out the PDF with no print scaling.
If using the index marks in the model for aligning on the paper is needed, I would create a second layer and trace the index marks on the first sheet and then lock the layer. After duplicating the page you can move the viewport so the next index mark along aligns with the tracing you made of the first one.
Easier to do than describe.
Edit to add, I got to my computer and checked. I was able to st the paper size to 4500mm by 3000 mm with no problem. Didn’t try any larger. So it looks like one viewport and one page in LayOut will probably do it for you. Poster print in Adobe Read or Acrobat or whatever.
Thanks for your help, Dave.
I laid out a grid with appropriate spacing on its own layer and used the grid in Layout to print out individual pdf’s. Then I can use the grids for reference lines to assemble all the pages. I think it should work - over 100 pages! Less printing cost with legal paper. Maybe there is an easier way with a script for next time.
For the size you described you shouldn’t need a script. You could enable the grid in Document Setup>Grid and set it to print so it shows in the PDF. Adjust the color of the grid lines along with the spacing. If you will do a lot of this sort of thing, make a custom template with the paper sized as needed and set the grid up. Then select it when you send your SketchUp file to LayOut.
Thank you Dave. I will save the grid design as a template, that will speed the process. Right now the work flow is to reposition the camera view in Sketchup and then fine tune the location each export/output using the grid lines in Layout. I am wondering if there is a way to “preselect” or “define” some or all of the Layout exports to speed the workflow. I am outputting reach file to a legal sized format, this is easier to assemble later and less costly to print.
Again, you can set the grid background in Layout so you don’t need to create a grid to save.
This is too much work. Create one scene in SketchUp showing the object for which you want to make the pattern. Save and send the file to LayOut. pick your template in LayOut which already has the paper size set large enough for your pattern to appear in its entirety. The viewport will appear centered on the sheet. Select the viewport and set the scale for it to 1:1 in the SketchUp Model panel. You may need to drag the edges of the viewport a little to show the whole pattern. You also might consider increasing the Line Scale in the SketchUp Model panel to make the lines appear thicker and you may want to render the viewport in Vector. With everything set, use File>Export to expoprt a PDF for printing.
I would use the Hidden Line face style with white background in SketchUp.
I don’t have any boat models on this computer to use for an example but here’s an elevation of a music stand. In SketchUp, one scene for this view.
In LayOut on a custom sized sheet of paper with a custom grid set up as I described. The viewport is set to 1:1 in the SketchUp Model panel.
After exporting to PDF and opening in Adobe Reader. I selected the Poster print option. On the right you can see the dashed lines showing the thing divided into multiple sheets.
Ok. That’s helpful. I have set the Layout document to 190" x 72". I will export to full size and organize the individual outputs via Adobe or similar.
One more question, I am having difficulty getting the Sketchup camera scene view to sync properly with the Layout template. I save and refresh the scene, then when I update the Layout template, the view moves in unpredictable amounts, and sometimes opposite to the changes in the camera view in Sketchup. Is there a precise location on the scene that is captured? Perhaps I experiencing some sort of software bug?
Probably not a bug. Most likely your setup in LayOut. Send me your LayOut file so I can see what you have. If you don’t want to share it publicly, click on my name and then Message and send it privately.
Thanks very much Dave. You’ve been super helpful and I learned a few things in the process. You’re very generous.
