Point Cloud Crashing LayOut

I have inserted a SketchUp model into layout and when it askes if I want the point cloud uploaded I say yes and it loads it up and my model pops up for a second and then layout crashes.

It works fine with my model, stays strong as long as I don’t import the cloud. Problem is I kinda need the cloud in there. I have used clouds in layout a ton and even some with similar size to the current one and it may have troubles sometimes rendering them but it never crashes on me. I did just barely updated to the current version of SketchUp and I feel that is where problem is.

Any tips or others having this issue

Hi,
I’m sorry for this.
In order to solve it, could you tell me:

  • the sketchup version you used
  • the scan essentials version you used
  • if you have installed LayOut the last time you updated Scan Essentials
Also, would it be possible to share with me the skp and the associated point cloud so that I can check what is the issue.

Thanks,
YS

Layout Version 26.2.243 64 bit

sketchup version 26.2.243 64 bit

scan essentails 1.2025.1013

WALSH RESIDENCE MODEL 1.skp (8.9 MB)

Heres a link to a drive with the scan in rwp and e57

Hi,
I will test on my side but download will take a bit of time.
In the meantime, what I see as potential issues:

  • you dont have the latest Scan Essentials update which may be the main reason of the crash
  • you shared with me a rwp but no rwi folder. Could you check that the rwi folder is located near the rwp file ?

Best,
YS

Weird I just updated everything. Ill have to check that.

Ill upload the RWI folder that shows up with the RWP

Hi,
We tried your data with the latest SketchUp and the latest Scan Essentials and it worked. Did the update work with you as well ?

i’d first try to separate whether it’s the point cloud itself or the new LayOut/Scan Essentials combo after the update.

a few things worth testing:

  • open the same SKP + point cloud in SketchUp first and save a clean copy
  • try inserting a lower-density/decimated version of the cloud into LayOut
  • test the same file with a blank LayOut document, not the existing one
  • if you still have the previous installer, compare against the version before the update

if it only started after the update and similar clouds worked before, i’d include the point cloud format, size, Scan Essentials version, GPU, and crash number in the support ticket. that’ll make it much easier for them to reproduce.
