Every one of the SketchUp models here was created from photos.

In order to get a clean import of an image, it needs to have a “crisp” border. If it’s a “fuzzy” image (like a JPEG) or photograph, it should be imported as an image and applied as a texture. Assuming clean artwork, you might try using the BMP Tracer plugin:

You can also import grayscale height data as a polygon mesh to convert from 2D to 3D:
