In some models I keep getting weird results when exporting to DAE for use in Cura. Uploaded a very simple object that seems to have this problem even though all faces seem to have the correct orientation… The model should simply be two cilinders with a small part overlapping, but in Cura’s layers view, it creates a weird part that should not be there. stofzuigerrep.dae (31.7 KB) stofzuigerrep.skp (178.2 KB)
Thanks, I never used that selection plane tool. Very useful!
Given that this is a very simple object, is there any wat to prevent the unwanted face from being created? I started with a circle, then made two smaller circles inside it, removed the center and then used the push pull tool/
I ususally perform the intersect faces process before exporting the object. Should that not have solved this too?
There are several ways to do that. One way would be to model a section of the object as a profile for Follow Me. There’s no chance of an internal face with this method.
When I model for 3D printing I set the units to meters and enter millimeters as meters. This allows me to use more segments in curves without have potential issues with small faces not forming.
In the beginning I did that too, but found out that sometimes the object lost resolution when scaled in cura. It is possible that the problem was elswhere, but I remember smaller details of the object would simply not print although this was before I regularly checked the layers view in cura.
What do you mean by “lost resolution”? There should be no need to scale it in Cura. Export from SketchUP with model units at meters, import into Cura with units in millimeters.
You would still need to model within the capabilities of the printer. It’s possible to model features that are smaller the resolution of your printer.
Try importing this file into Cura. Does it end up 100mm tall? It does when I import it. stofzuigerrep.stl (37.6 KB)
yes, the model is scaled properly. I remember only having the problem very occasionally.
It might have been with an earlier iteration of something like this:
When exporting from sketchup I do not remember ever setting any units (I du when starting a project by selecting the template). In Cura I also do not recall importing at any scale. I do sometimes use the scale function after the model has already loaded but usually with my own designs I make them in the desired proportions in sketchup so I do not have to scale anything.
The exporter will export using Model Units so if you set them to Meters you should be good. Remember that .stl files have no units. The dimensions are just numbers.
The Cura-based slicer I use only imports in millimeters. There’s nothiing to set. Some slicers will also accept inches.
If you are creating the model correctly in the first place there would be no need to scale it in the slicer.
