Hi all. I am using web sketchup were I want to build a cruciform weld. I can manage most of it (straight welds) but have issues with “corner of the weld” where the 2 straight welds need to join and look organic. See attachment please for more info.
I have used the follow me tool but to no success as It seems impossible to follow me a shape drawing by freehand tool.
I am maybe going the wrong way around this issues and it might be an easy fix.
scale it up 100x or 1000x and try follow me again. then scale it down.
sketchup has trouble with very small lines, and if you’re trying to do a follow me on a very small detail, it might not work because of that.
but scaling up then down will work.
Or better yet take @ateliernab idea - make it a component, copy to side. Scale x100. Edit your ‘big’ component. Try follow me again. Your original sized component will update with the changes.
And you might have to make the ‘weld’ separately and then Solid Tools>Union to get them both together.
Thanks all for the quick replies. Ateliernab I have done up-scalling by 100 and has worked. However I still need some tidying up…
bmike I unfortunately have only the free web version so no solid tools etc…
Ateliernab would you know how to get the artifacts / lines away? I also have had a gap which I had to manually join the lines along the way…time consuming and in the end I still have some edges which are now are not filled.
It will be used as a drawing that can be printed. It’s for some uni work, presentation etc. I have used the follow me tool on a freehand bevel edge, hence why I managed to get the weld looking a bit better.
The pic shows the weld line which I managed to draw with free hand and then follow around. It did stop halfway thru and therefore some gaps were created…
I think I also used Hide option hence why some of the faces are not showing. Unsure how to make the faces visible again…
Have you done what was suggested and scaled the model up by a factor of 100 or 1000?
As for the hidden geometry, click on the eye glasses icon and turn on Hidden Geometry. You can then right click on the hidden geometry and choose Unhide. You can also use the search tool to find these sorts of things.
FWIW, SketchUp Free is probably not the best choice of applications for modeling the sort of thing you are trying to do here.
Yeah I have scaled to a 1000 factor and has worked better. I then have to downscale or keep as is especially it is going to be printed on paper and not 3d printed.
Appreciate the tip about search etc. And yes a lot of other tutorials I have watched have full versions or paid versions of SK hence why I have limitations etc.
Thanks again
