OpenCutList dimensional material sizes

The default settings for Dimensional materials in fractional units in OpenCutList are North American - for example, a 2x4 is defined as having finished dimensions of 1 1/2" x 3 1/2", and a 2x1 finishes 3/4" x 1 1/2".

UK “dimensional” softwood has smaller planing allowances, so a UK 2x4 (or 4x2) finishes at 1 3/4" x 3 3/4", and a 2x1 finishes as 7/8" x 1 3/4".

And since I work sometimes in feet and inches, and sometimes in metric dimensions, I’d need to do the same for the metric equivalent sizes (which is how softwood is described and ordered from timber merchants in the UK).

Metric equivalents are that a 50 x 100mm nominal size finishes about 44 x 94mm and 25x50mm nominal size finishes about 22 x 44mm.

I can set these up for myself as Presets (I think - I’ve only just started trying to use OpenCutlList v6) but I wonder if any UK woodworker has already done that?

And if it would be possible for these to be included as alternative factory default settings in OpenCutList itself?

Hi @john_mcclenahan,

It is not possible to change factory settings. They have been defined as an example for the most common use in the chosen system.
This is supported by the fact that you can adapt them to your own default values.

Perhaps this is a sign to only use the metric system :joy:

Thank you for confirming that.

I work as a volunteer at our local amateur theatre where much of the scenery dates back to the 1960s, pre-metric days in Britain. So we still build new scenery to match the old, in Imperial units of feet and inches.
