My SketchUp file is not working

Hi, I would like you to help me to recover my file, neither the original nor the backup works, I tried changing the location of the file and opening it in another computer and it still doesn’t work. I hope you can help me.

Yesterday I was working on the file and was saving, at one point the power went out and when the power came back on I opened the file and it was still working, I left the project finished and today when I came back the file was not working.

Mar y Tierra v2.skp (15.5 MB)

the file is almost completely filled with zeroes.

can’t access your google drive link, it requires authorisation, but if you changed the skb to skp and still nothing, it doesn’t bode well for the file.

Hi, thanks for your reply, yes I did change it skb to skp, I guess I will have to do the work again from the last saved version.

Where have you been saving the .skp file while working on it? Make sure you are saving to an internal drive, not a USB drive or memory stick.

Since you have a Studio subscription, take advantage of your Trimble Connect storage and save your file there periodically as an additional backup. Each time you save your work to Trimble Connect it creates an additional file so you end up with incremental versions and you can go back to an earlier one if needed.

Hi, I was working on the local disk, I have two disks, one SSD and one HDD, I had the file saved on the 2TB HDD.

I have already started the project again since I have to deliver to the client, but do you know what are these problems in the file? why are they generated? or is it just a random problem with some files?

I don’t know exactly why this occurs but it seems that the error happens while saving. Might be some other process happens at the same time as the save. Maybe it’s an issue with the HDD. I had one in an old computer that became troublesome. I quickly replaced it before I had any real problems.

To be on the safe side save frequently and as I wrote, also save to your Trimble Connect storage so you have a backup stored elsewhere.

Damaged skp files that were saved on external devices or over a network have been reported for years. The problem is actually extremely rare and very sensitive to some unknown specific situations - there are users who save to such places for years without seeing a problem, and others that get it repeatedly. We see more reports of it here because this forum is one of the main places people turn to when they encounter the problem. The advice to save to the internal hard drive is because we almost never hear of file corruption there.

Obviously, there is some kind of vulnerability in the way SketchUp saves files. The devs are aware of the issue, but because they can’t reproduce it reliably they have not been able to find a fix.
