I have Sketchup 2017 on a Win 10 PC, which I am retiring. I want to move it to my new Win 11 PC, but this free version was licensed as Sketchup Make 2017 User with serial number MAKE, which cannot be used to activate the program on the new PC. If I try to reinstall, it seems that my files are not openable by the installation. What can I do?
Hopefully you have saved, or neglected to delete the 2017 installation .exe file from your downloads folder. Have a look for it there, if you find it copy it to a thumb drive or upload it to drop box etc and install it on your new PC.
Make didn’t have a serial number. If you had a Pro serial number you could add that, and Make would become Pro. That won’t work currently, due to problems with the license server.
I don’t know Windows migration tools, but if they exist like they do on Mac, you may be able to migrate the installed Make on the old machine, and have it work on the new machine.
If you do still have an installer, what is the full name of the installer file?
Hi Colin, I’m also planning to move to a Windows 11 PC in the near future. I have Sketchup Pro years 21-24 installed on my current PC. All the versions have only been installed on this single PC.
Of course I would want to continue using Sketchup24 on the new Windows 11 PC, I would also like to be able to have the option to install the last non-subscription Sketchup version if needed in the future. (I have kept all the install files, and I’m pretty sure a have all the serial numbers)
What would the correct procedure to accomplish this? Thank you
I am pretty sure that the c:\ProgramData\ folder would survive an update to Windows 11. You could go into that folder and copy the SketchUp folder somewhere else, then copy it back after the update to Windows 11.
That’s the folder where license files live. Other support files are in these locations:
%AppData%\SketchUp\
%LocalAppData%\SketchUp\
I think those would survive as well, but again you could copy the SketchUp folders somewhere before doing the update.
My Win10 PC isn’t up to snuff to upgrade to Win11. So I would be a moving to a brand new PC, so I was planning on reinstalling Sketchup 24.
I guess I’m asking if I should deactivate all my Sketchup installations before reinstalling?
Also would I be able to reinstall my 21.1.332 version with classic license in the future on the new Win11 PC if I wanted?
Sorry if I wasn’t clear earlier
Open SketchUp 2021 on the old PC and remove the classic license, then you should have freed it up to be used again on a new PC. If the old machine still has the 2021 installer, you might want to copy that across to the new machine. The downloads page only goes back to 2022 now.
You also should use Extension Manager to uninstall any paid extensions.
For all versions of SketchUp, 2019 and later, open them on the old computer and make sure you are signed out, then close SketchUp. That should free up any subscription activations for the new machine to use.
Thanks. And my current 2024 version? Is there no license to remove since it’s a subscription? Just install on the new Win11 PC?
I’ll quit pestering you after this question… Thanks again
If you’re not going to continue using SketchUp on the old PC you might as well open 2024 and make sure you’re signed out. If you’re going to continue with any version on both computers, being signed on both should work, but being signed in on two versions on both computers would add up to four sign-ins, which is more than you’re allowed to do.
Got it. Thanks so much!
Hi,
I had the same problem this autumn. At last I found SketchUp Make 2017-2-2555-90782-en-x64 : Trimble : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive, downloaded it on my windows 11 PC and installed it. So far it works and I can use my models created om my Windows 10 PC.
A thousand thanks!!! I have downloaded, installed and am using.
Lena, you have saved my Sketchy life! Thank you and a Happy New Year.
