Treadle Lathe #1.skp (944.5 KB)

I looked at Treadle Lathes from different places and then tried my own that is really a pedal
lathe. I still haven’t figured out how to change gears, and I haven’t added the belts.

You could add a reversed set of pulleys (not sure if they are called that in this situation) in between the set you have and your "drive"roll. That way the belt length can stay the same…

Thanks for the comment. I’ll look into it.

I am not a mechanic. I have no idea if I could shift gears with these parts or not. This is what came up with anyway. Maybe I should stick to one gear.

Your shifter arrangement would not result in different “gearing”. In order to do that the diameter of the drive in the headstock and/or the flywheel at the bottom would need to be changeable. That’s most commonly done with stepped pulleys. Depending on the arrangement you might need to include a spring-loaded idler wheel or you might put the flywheel on a pivot so it can move vertically and its weight can tension the belt.

Example of a stepped pulley on a lathe with a stepped pulley on the jack shaft above. Obviously this one is for a flat belt but it’s the same idea.

Yeah, that breaks the rubber band that holds my BA in History and MBA paperwork together. I should have studied math and engineering.

I did learn how to make a leaf spring solid but still not too well aligned.

Model each leaf nested with its neighbor. Model them in place and alignment will be perfect.

I’ll try. If I had modeled with that in mind from the start . . . Too often I have no clue and then start adding things afterwards with too much in the way. Time to take a deep breath, tag a bunch of stuff in the way, and then turn the visibility off. When you keep plowing ahead without a plan, you start seeing double and getting punch drunk.

Bird House I modeled just for fun.

Nice bird house but at least in our parts, putting in the perch is discouraged. It makes it easier for predators to reach the inhabitants. The position and size of the hole should be determined by the intended species.

I haven’t heard that about the perch. Birds get predated by lots of snakes squirrils, raccoons, and other birds around here.

I would place the hole a little higher…

Narrowed the dia. of the opening, did away with the perch, and moved the opening up.

Here’s an attempt at humor more that a real DIY project, just for fun.

Hmmmm…… odd but interesting concept. Got to say a true “Luddite” will just break out the joiner plane, shoot the edges glue them up and be done with it.

That sounds like me.

Scratch Stock #1.skp (81.9 KB)

I started this by drawing a bead on the Workpiece. Then, I move/copied the profile and drew the Scratchstock Blade. Next, I modeled the handle. Finally, I modeled the screws.
