Modelling a fish hook

I am very new to SU. I would like to try and expand my skills by modeling a fish hook, and then eventually model a fly fishing fly.

I have made several attempts, but the barbed end is beyond me. I would really like the barbed end to flow smoothly into the hook. Hooks are made from continuous wire.

I have also done my best to search the forums for relevant topics.

Any pointers to relevant posts or other help will be greatly appreciated.

I think I have uploaded my latest attempt.

Thanks,

T

Would this play for you OK?

DaveR,

Heck yes. So what did I do wrong and what did you do right?

Thanks,

Tom

I wouldn’t say you did anything wrong or I did anything right. I just did it slightly differently.

I drew a centerline for the hook which ends at the start of the taper. I initially traced over the image to create the centerline. This was used as a path for Follow Me. For the taper I used Push/Pull. I toggled on creating a new starting face by tapping Ctrl (Option on Mac, IIRC) and then scaled the end down. I made the hook a component ensuring it was marked as Solid in Entity Info.

For the barb I started with a cylinder drawn vertically, I tapered the top of it to make it pointy and then using Move with Autofold (Command on Mac, I think) I moved the top of the cone-ish shape over to make it sort of barb-like. The bottom of the cylinder extended down inside the hook. I made it a solid component, too. Finally, I used the Union tool from Bool Tools 2 to combine the barb with the hook. You can use Outer Shell which is native. I prefer BoolTools2 because it respects components while the native Solid Tools don’t.

Here’s the file. You can play with it.

Dave has given you a great method and this might be a touch more complex than you want for something so small but I got interested in the shape so here’s another method for making the barb.

Box,

That is super. It is almost how the barb is made. I don’t have all those extensions (yet?). I am trying to stick with native tools for the first few months of my using SU. But wow, that is pretty dang nifty.
