Long, long wait updating SketchUp into Layout

I have been troubled by half hour plus waits in updating pages in Layout. The SketchUp file
has been long in the works with a great many conceptual scenes for decision makers review. I have used the purge function in the model statistics window and found the stats unchanged.
I am on a Macbook Pro, w/ Sonoma 14.3 a.nd have not updated to latest SketchUp due to
fears something might break. File attached.
Kitchenette Model 4A.skp (9.3 MB)

In my books the model is heavyish, with about 700 000 entities but I am old-school. It is probably due to some entourage components. If your LayOut viewports use Vector or Hybrid rendering, this might cause the slow loading, especially if there are as many viewports as there are scenes in your model. You could try switching back to raster rendering and to use the Output Override to export your PDFs etc. in Vector or Hybrid.

You could simplify the model considerably. The geometry from the terrain objects seem to have excessive eintity counts.

Do you really need two of them? Do you need those copies of the windows and Heather located almost 450 feet from the rest of the model?

You should be able to create your concept views without making multiple instances of those elements that don’t change. Use tag visibility to control which concept options are visible for each scene. That would streamline the model considerably andreduce the amount of geometry that LayOut has to consider for rendering viewports.

I see there are four copies of the Translucent Glass texture. Although not a huge file it’s three more than you need here. And you might consider running CleanUp3 on the model. Just merging coplanar faces reduced the edge count quite dramatically.

I also fixed incorrect tag usage.

Thanks, that is very helpful. I will checkout CleanUp 3. Did not see that you had attached your cleaned up file of my model, maybe that is prudent.
A new problem has occurred during my efforts in dealing. I am locked out of the file, now only in read mode. I have quit Layout, signed out and signed in in SketchUp and permissions window still says I am not authorized to make changes. This has been a nuisance before but can’t seem to correct. Thanks for your help

I didn’t atttach the file after cleaning it up. I think you need to do some work on it anyway to streamline it.

Try signing out of SketchUp again and then do a cold reboot of your computer. Sign into “All things SketchUp” and see if that works.

Hello Sproutsradio,

If you have long wait times, I’m assuming you might be using vector or hybrid for some of your SU view-ports.

Personally, coming from an Autocad background, I always leaned to vector PDF outputs because I liked the crisp line work as well as the small PDF file sizes, which unfortunately for LO, causes huge delays.

I’ve posted several times on this forum with suggestions of how the LO team might be able to speed things up by utilizing a technique to harness the full power of multi-threaded CPUs. Hopefully they give it a try.

Until then, I decided recently to give up on vector or hybrid, and spent the time to refine my style settings to get very nice outputs from raster view-ports.

The key is to not use JPG compression for images when you export. This will result in clean backgrounds. You then need to play with the Style in SU (Profiles, Depth Cue, Section Cuts…) and the Line Scale in LO until you get the level of detail you want with the line weights that read well for your drawing output.

In my case, in SU I use:

And in LO I use:

After converting all vector/hybrid view-ports to raster on a recent project I’ve been working on, my “Render Models In Document” (which renders all view-ports on all pages in one go) time went from 5 to 10 minutes to under 30 seconds for 22 Pages.

I can now update a page with 5 or 6 view-ports of a 70Mb SU file in less than 5 seconds.

Your 9MB model in raster renders is a fraction of a second for me.

Hope that helps.

Okay, thanks, working again. But, could not find CleanUp 3 in Extension Warehouse. Is that where to look? Appreciate the help.

It’s the first thing that pops up for me when I search for Cleanup.

Yes, thanks, it is now enabled. But golly sorry, can’t figure out how to access it, use it. It is not showing up under View-Tool Palettes or anywhere else I can think of.

Did you read the page for the extension in the Warehouse? Did you install the required tt_lib files? Did you restart SketchUp? There is no toolbar to find in Tool Palettes.

Thanks, got it working.

Thanks for this. I have just wasted a day trying to get layout to update. I had one small model that was vector on one page. I have returned it to raster and it now updates.
Another feature that is pretty much a waste of space.

Unless you need vector output.

Much thanks for this advice. Learning a lot here.

Thanks for this-- I’ve also been struggling with vector conversion times and this might be a good solution for me.

Happy it might help.

I do but it isn’t working
