Long Delay When Updating SketchUp Model in LayOut 2024 on MacBook Air M2 Despite Optimization Efforts

I am experiencing significant delays when updating a SketchUp model in LayOut 2024. My SketchUp model is relatively simple, approximately 4.5 MB in size, without intricate details. However, each time I make changes to the model, save it, and then update the reference in LayOut, the process takes nearly three minutes. During this time, LayOut becomes unresponsive, displaying the spinning rainbow wheel. I am using a MacBook Air with the M2 chip.

I have already tried the following adjustments:

1.	Set the rendering quality to medium or low in Document Setup > Rendering.
2.	Switched model viewports to raster mode.
3.	Disabled auto-rendering and updated viewports manually.

Unfortunately, I am unable to attach the file due to NDA restrictions. Despite these changes, the issue persists. What could be causing this, and are there any additional solutions?

Do yo have a lot of custom textures? How large are they?

If yes, do a save as and use Material Resizer plugin and shrink them down to something less than 1080 on the long edge. Smaller is ok too, so you can also try that.

Have you purged the SKP model of materials and components?

I don’t have any custom textures in the model. The only texture used is a plywood material, and it’s applied sparingly. I also already performed a purge of unused materials and components to ensure nothing extra is weighing down the file.

It’s a shame you can’t share the LO file. It would be interesting to see what happens with different hardware.

BTW, please update your forum profile.

One thing that might give us a clue is to show a screenshot of, File/Document Setup/ References

this shouldn’t violate any non disclosures.

Another screen that would perhaps give a clue would be the SketchUp Statistics window of your model (Model Info>Statistics, tick the “Show nested components” box)

How large is the plywood texture (pixel size of the source image)?

Shadows on / off?

How many scenes and how many pages in the LO file?

Have you inserted the model multiple times into your LayOut file? That would increase loading time. The correct workflow is to insert it once, and then make copies of the first viewport for the other scenes in the model.

I inserted the model only once into the LayOut file, and for each additional view, I simply copied the pages. I haven’t inserted the model multiple times, so that shouldn’t be affecting the loading time.

929 component instances and 317 groups could be, though.

The plywood texture is a standard one from the SketchUp library, and the shading is set to ‘Shaded with Textures’ mode. There are about 12 scenes in the model, with a corresponding 12 pages in the LayOut file. Each page includes two viewports.

Does anything happen if you hit the Purge button in Document Setup? What’s with that old version of the .skp file?

Have you cleaned up the .skp file?

I’m guessing all those images embedded in the LO file are bogging you down. What resolution are they? How large?

You also have a lot of embedded SKP models in there - are you using them all? LO is trying to load all that stuff - so hit purge, and if that list doesn’t get smaller I would look at figuring out where those other models are showing up and remove them if you don’t need them.

Currently you don’t just have ‘a 4.5mb model’ - you have many many SKP models in that file that it needs to render.

And it looks like you have a duplicate of the model noted as ‘old’. Do you need it? Apologies that my arrow was mis-drawn - but it should be pointing to the SKP files.
