Updating The Model in LayOut 2024

Hello all,

I created my model in SU 2024 verison along with the drawings in LayOut. I made few changes to the model since I’ve upgraded to 2025 version. However when I attempted to “update” or “relink” the model, LayOut takes so much and then when I click it freezes. I tried the following:

  1. opened LayOut → Document Setup → “Update”: Freezes.
  2. opened LayOut → Document Setup → “Relink”: Freezes.
  3. opened LayOut → Document Setup → Unlink → Relink: Freezes.
  4. opened LayOut → Document Setup → Unlink → File → Insert → SU Model → Update the new viewport “works fine” → Update old viewport: Freezes.

So now I can replace all existing viewports with the new ones and it would work, but my worries is in a bigger project that this method is not reliable and hence LayOut should NOT be used for such cases.

Is there a way to resolve this issue?

Thank you in advance.

What rendering type do you have set up for the viewports? How many viewports? How many edges in the model? How large are the textures in the model?

What operating system? “64” doesn’t identify an operating system. What graphics card model? Your forum profile doesn’t say. Your forum profile shows you are still using SketchUp 2021. Please update the information.

Perhaps. Share the LayOut file so we can see what you have going on and try to help you.

Hi Dave, Thanks for your quick reply. I’ve updated the specs of my laptop and SU version.
Below are the links for the video of the attemps.

Attempt 2:

Hope that helps.

I’ll look and see what I can see.

BTW, you should probably delete the LayOut file link since the LO file contains contact information that you might not want out there.

will do, thanks and i’ll wait for your feedback.

Question: Have you been working on your file with the SketchUp model saved directly to One Drive? Is the LayOut file on One Drive while you’re working on it?

Well, you have a ton of geometry in the model that needs to be considered for rendering.

One simple example is the grid panels.

Rendering the viewports as Vector or Hybrid will take a great deal of time because of objects like those.

It also doesn’t help that you’ve got some excessively large texture images.

Nor does the environment image help.

I also see you have your model spread out over a relatively large area. I would recommend bringing this thing in closer to the origin. Or just use the original that is in the main model for any views you need ot it.

Does your model really need to cover more than half a kilometer?

Based on the scenes you have in the model there are a lot of superfluous massing models. I expect you could reduce the size substantially. That would improve the graphics.

What is the reason for the building masses underneath the ground mass?

I expect you could simplify the model quite a lot and that would reduce rendering times.

I notice in LayOut you have Display Rendering for viewports set to High. That’ll also increase rendering time. Set it to Medium or even Low. Leave viewports rendered as Raster. They may not actually need to be rendered as Hybrid or Vector at all for your PRF exports. When you get ready to make the export see if things look good enough with Raster viewports. For many users there’s little benefit to Vector or Hybrid rendering for PDF output.

I also notice a lot of incorrect tag usage in your SketchUp model.

You should make sure that all edges and faces are create and remain untagged.

Thanks Dave for the extensive analysis, I’ll follow your guidelines and get back to you with the result.

Regarding OneDrive, yes I do work on the model while it’s being in OneDrive. Does that affect?

You’re welcome.

It can affect things. Access time can be quite long which of course with your heavy model would make rendering times even longer. We’ve seen plenty of examples of corrupted files because the user was working on the file directly from One Drive. In some cases half or more of the file gets replaced with zeroes. In some cases it’s the entire file. Of course that kind of thing is unrecoverable.

Best practice is to keep all of your references for a given LayOut project in a folder saved on the internal drive. If you need to have the files on One Drive, copy the project folder to the cloud.

I would also recommend that you save at least your SketchUp files to your Trimble Connect storage. Each time you do that youcreate an incremental backup of that file. Sort of a belt and braces thing.
