LayOut - Why can't I snap dimensions properly?

I’m trying to snap a dimension from one edge to another edge, along the Green axis…
The dimension just wont snap to anything other than a point, even if I constraint the dimension to a certain axis.

Is there something wrong that I’ve been putting up with for years? Or is this how LayOut is supposed to work?

The following is a Zip file is a video of what I am experiencing.

Cannot snap.zip (375.4 KB)

Share the LO file s owe can see what you have going on.

Here’s a wee part of the main file. (skp2025)

snap test.layout (574.7 KB)

Someone else will explain better but it’s always been like this I think – just tested with 2023.

It’s behaviour that I haven’t questioned…

Not sure what the issue is, I can snap to the edge, and if I pull straight left or right I get what I assume is the correct dimension.

I struggle with it. I always assumed it’s a 3D thing, where the two ends snapped to are at different depths, which you can’t tell in ortho, as well as the separation in distance you can see.

It’s made me wonder what the search order is when LO hunts for points to snap to. Does it start near the camera and work it’s way farther away, or is it just some pseudo-random order that objects are saved/listed in the SU file?

I often toggle my style to ‘back edges’ when dimensioning, then swap it back, helps cut down on the hunting…

@AK_SAM just watched your video again - you are snapping… if you pull parallel with the walls you get accurate dimensions - you can snap anywhere on that edge and you can pull accurate dimensions just by making sure you are pependicular to the desired dimension line.
