After all the begging for a speeder Layout, I don’t see a single improvement for 2021.
Am I missing something?
I’m seeing faster rendering of SketchUp viewports, easier placement of objects when moving them and the ability to streamline my SketchUp models more so I can manage with fewer scenes.
Well, I was going by the release notes.
So does anyone else want to chime in?
If there were improvements in LO, that would be the first thing I would highlight in the release notes.
c_j_ryan,
I think you can therefore conclude that Trimble once again pretty much left LayOut behind in major improvements! We apparently get some secondary effect improvements, but no basic code rewrites that might really give us the new, snappy and powerful LayOut we keep begging for …
What’s happening on the LO API thing? Wasn’t that introduced a couple of versions ago so that plugins / extensions could be built for LO? Yet I don’t see any such LO enhancements happening, except for some efforts by CURIC, but they’re using a workaround / hack which could be much better implemented through proper enhancement.

Julian,
I don’t know the answer … but I’ll tell you the extension I want: “LayOut Pro”! (instead of “LayOut Light”!)
Hard to be confident about “live Components” when we already have so many “half baked” efforts LO API being one of them… so much potential with the amazing 3rd party developers that SU rides on the back of… so little performance from “Trimble”
I think Major release’s focus on the core (=3D) and then during the year, we get to see more 2D, like we did last release. No worries, there is a lot going on ‘under the hood’, I believe.
I wouldn’t mind not having a live API at all inside LayOut, since then you would get the same situation inside SketchUp where ‘Anything can be done’ if you have this and that extensions or workaround. Some things should work out of the box, period.
A LayOut document is just a zipped XML file, it can already be accessed from the outside (Like @kengey’s bulkrenderer LayOut bulk rerender)
Classifications in SketchUp are zipped XML-files, too, and can be imported or exported in the Model Info.
In theory, one could import a XML-file in Classifications with a preset of viewports to populate standard views or scenes, and tag Components for instance to have an isolated, separate viewport.
You can assign multiple classification tags already, so there might be a classification .skc for adding dimensions to bounding boxes, too.
Sending to LayOut would create the document, just to be reviewed.
He @trampy! Keeping up with all the update on your nintendo?
Definitely less clicking! Easier to highlight multiple objects now. This alone has made Layout much faster for me.
No improvements. I’ve sat for 5+ minutes many, many times waiting for a vector-hybrid viewport to render.
One thing that can take a long time is the creation of the Pages thumbnails. If you either close the Pages palette, or change it to show a list instead of thumbnails, are you able to go into vector and hybrid quicker?
Thanks Colin and not much improvement. I think LO doesn’t do well as the amount of geometry increases. Zooming can be painful.
If you want to effectively use Layout for complex projects, you have to give up on hybrid. Go for raster, lock viewport layers, reload from document setup references, do not auto render, reduce the number of pages to the minimum possible. Dimensioning should be done with only two visible layers, the dimension and the plan view. Dimension section cut faces, not views of the model. Split your model into two juxtaposed viewports 1 the section view of the model and 2 the section cut face. Split them into two layers in layout. If you want to cycle fast through pages and have them all updated after a reload, then export a pdf and go drink a coffee, after that pages will cycle fast. If you need the final export to be vector, reserve a day for the export. Never do competitions in any mode other than raster, you’re bound to not deliver if you do so.
Layout 2021 goes into “not responding” for 10 seconds EVERY time I click on scrapbooks to grab a detail. Did not happen in previous versions. Anyone else having this problem? Ready to throw a chair!!!
nope
why not share the offending scrapbook…?
Its not any particular scrapbook. Default or custom, it doesn’t matter. It occurs each time I click on the drop down menu button to access any of them.
Have your scrapbooks been saved in the version 2021 format?
No they haven’t, but it occurs when i click the dropdown menu. Even to select the native “arrows”, for example.
